Douglas Todd: Jarring 18-storey tower on leafy Vancouver street a sign of the out-of-scale times
About 10 steel-and-glass highrises, much like the one proposed for Yukon and 14th, are set to arise among character homes within the Broadway plan zone.

Douglas Todd: Hundreds of quiet east Vancouver side streets upzoned for six-storey apartment blocks
Some residents in the vast Rupert and Renfrew area did not know their pleasant side streets had been upzoned for six- to eight-storey apartment blocks. It calls into question the city of Vancouver's murky "engagement strategy."

'Monstrosities' or the evolution of housing? Multi-unit buildings on single-family lots gain traction in B.C. cities
The number of multi-unit developments on single-family lots is increasing in B.C. neighbourhoods dominated by single-detached houses. Opinions vary over what these changes will mean for communities.

Anakin/Padme meme

I oppose this building because it's too tall

It's just this building, not all new housing?

You are not against all new housing, right?

A storey in four acts as captured by local news media:

18 storeys is too high, we’d be fine with 4-6 storeys

6 storeys are too big, we'd be fine with multiplexes

Multiplexes are monstrosities, we are fine with existing post-Second World War bungalows

like 90% of my disillusion with left politics in canada is that they want to spend nothing on the military in the nazi times, and the NIMBY wing remains strong

IIRC Aitchison's own housing plan when he ran for leader was significantly more punitive towards municipalities than the Liberals have been. Sad to see him having to pander to the NIMBYs now

I do know a guy who got a visit from the police over some Facebook posts. But you know, make veiled threats about shooting the PM probably *should* prompt some investigation

Also pretty much none of this is Canada-specific, Americans are just generally so unaware as to not even realize their own indigenous peoples still exist

Have Peterson or McCullough been ranting about it? I could easily see that getting garbled into whatever this nonsense is

AFAIK it's basically all comes from Genesis 15:18, "On the same day the LORD made a covenant with Abram, saying: β€œTo your descendants I have given this land, from the river of Egypt to the great river, the River Euphrates" - so it's based on nothing, really, but it's catnip for fundies like Huckabee

Avi Lewis spent the last leadership debate calling the US fascist, saying we need to end our deals with them, and oh also Carney is a militarist and military spending should go back to Harper levels

HDI includes GDP/capita as one of it's components so yeah, it's gonna be closely correlated. Doesn't make it useless.

Dunno how accurate the figures are, but Indeed says nurses make an average of $43 USD/hr in Detroit and $45 CAD/hr in Windsor. 43 USD = ~58 CAD currently, so that's a 28% salary for the average

My brother-in-law is one of them. It's a considerable difference, enough that even with the significant additional commuting costs he comes out ahead of what he would make working in Windsor. As Angus says, there's well over 1000 nurses doing the same.

I don't think it was a scale, respondents were asked to rank 6 different factors in order of responsibility. So the majority thought the feds were most responsible, and only a slight majority had municipalities in their top 3.

step 1: ban apartments

step 2: now everyone can afford to live in a spacious single family home with a yard and a garage close to school, work, and amenities

step 3: utopia :D
