I hate musical theater it's like ... real people don't just break into song whenever they have a big thought. It's cosplaying as a real play and shorthanding the dialog and subtext into songs. I am very smart to think this.

Yeah I think that's kinda what I'm getting at. I think there's an ascribable cause either way and the distinction is becoming less and less material and his resistance to try and draw it out or articulate a response is ... disheartening as is the refusal to put his feet to the fire on it.

I still kinda think he's not antisemitic just Very Dumb (which to me is also probably disqualifying) but BOY is it getting harder and harder to believe in that case.

We started on St. Patrick's Day

In part because like they're really going for like ... 5-10 mimetic moments or images and the rest is gravy, and while I see the like ... strategic value there or whatever it sucks and it isn't why I watch movies and it bums me out as a screenwriter!

yeah they are not never but rarely funny movies with silly premises. They are usually movies with silly premises that have no moves outside the premise. Like you can imagine Sharknado having a bunch of fun bits that relate to the Sharknado but are independently interesting but they don't do that.

plus the premise is doing too much of the work "this thing exists isn't that weird" isn't really dramatically or comically interesting but the best move the movies have is to point at their premise over and over and that's not really a story or a style that works.

To me it is a question of sincerity. All of those things come across not like the people who made them thought "this idea is so fun and we're gonna do it in a cool way for people to enjoy" but rather "this is so dumb and goofy people will irony laugh" and fishing for that makes the shit feel shallow

It's really bad when a bad world makes us worse, but it's so very hard to fight it. When someone feeds us to sharks it's hard not to hate them and the shark even if it makes whatever good is inside us get a little twisted and rotten. It is very sad.
