Having just about made it through the first weeks of 2026, I now understand at the core of my being why the Oxford University Press chose “rage-bait” as the 2025 word of the year.

“we need to let go of the machine”
The conversation metaphor is lovely.
It feels to me that the complexity, dynamical, systems theory approaches Cutts points to in this essay should have eclipsed the mechanical by now…
a lot is bleak, really really bleak ofc, but i'm in a perverse way hopeful for media (moreso than, say, climate)
it's dead, it's been dead, the only way out is through. support the outlets doing the tiny, mighty stuff we need. invulnerability of the truly grassroots?

Not exactly this... but we recently had a great meeting with Gabriela Radulescu on the history of radio astronomy & SETI in the context of Armenia and the former Czechoslovakia. A great thinker and historian, expanding the conversation from USA focus.

What I love about making my work is that sense of, where did that come from? And while I am most definitely an obsessive planner - I never know where I’m going. I know what I want to explore, but the shape it finally takes always surprises me. And that’s how it should be…

Yes, SETI@home was a beacon. Different times for science, tech & learning! Big fan of recent works carrying on the spirit, like the nice zooniverse project 'Are We Alone in the Universe?' from Megan Li & Jean-Luc Margot that invites folk to sort radio signal images: newsroom.ucla.edu/releases/fin...

on a brown dwarf dozens of light years from us, astronomers have detected trace amounts of a molecule that, on this planet, is made by living things.
this discovery is not life. but it will help astronomers on their quest to find it elsewhere in the galaxy:

Hubble image of the nebula N44, in the Large Magellanic Cloud. It shows a "superbubble", a dark, starry void 250 light-years across at the upper centre, surrounded by clouds of bright red hydrogen gas, black lanes of dust and bright spots of massive stars. The deep blue area at about 5 o’clock around the superbubble stands out as the hottest and most active in star formation.

The story goes on...
"..the dust & ice that make up 3I/ATLAS are similar to those of the comets that formed within our Solar System. That suggests comets from within our Solar System & those from interstellar space share similar formation processes..”
