Trevor Goody at the Bullhead Road partyh

We are featuring this particular party because we have just received this photo from Trevor Goody - now living in Perthshire - enjoying his day with friends in Bullhead Road. Thanks to Trevor for his photo - maybe you have a personal memory of your VE Day?

Indeed some of our volunteers at the Museum remember the parties and talk about them. Here is a photo of the Bullhead Road party where the cameraman must be on a tall ladder.

Where were you on VE Day, the 8th May 1945? There were many street parties in Borehamwood and Elstree, and our elder citizens are sure to remember this day. After the deprivations and suffering of the War it was such a relief to get together and enjoy the day, knowing the war was over.

Maybe you have some knowledge of it? And why was it called 'Suicide Corner' when it was a roundabout?

But no-one could remember it. We have now traced it on a 1913 map to an old Beer House near the Brick Works on Elstree Road on the rise up Brockley Hill. The building was still there in this 1939 photo, but no longer a pub. Now it's under the M1.

Does anyone know the story of 'The Duke of Marlborough' pub on the A5 between Elstree and Stanmore? According to Wynn Everett it was owned by Sir Trevor Dawson of Edgewarebury House and was near 'Suicide Corner'. He had some of his half-timbering left over and so covered the pub.

Plaque dedicated to Paul Welsh in Borehamwood

Look out for a new Plaque dedicated to Paul Welsh next to the bench at the entrance to Tescos. Paul was responsible for all the film plaques around town, so it is only fitting he has his very own now. It tells his story of a local lad who saved the studios and became a foremost authority on films.
