TLDR art college is fine but not essential to success and very expensive.

It has the potential to change your life for better or worse.

You can learn a lot, but you can learn the same things through programs like CGMA, Gnomon, reading books, or joining a community of artists.

And ALWAYS be weary of private for-profit schools. They’re not bad places, but they often promote themselves as essential to success. They’re not, and many who go get no advantage.

Remember your success always comes down to YOU, your work ethic, and your material circumstances.

Also, interested in going a for-profit college? I’d recommend looking up their recent history, not just their PR. What are the students going there now critical of? What do they think of the school’s leadership? If you find trends, think on how much those matter to you.

I think education and learning are incredibly important in life. But academia? Not really.

I came to college wanting to work in the animation industry, and by that metric, I’m a failure. I’d like to someday. I’m still working on my skills, but I still really enjoy doing it.

That’s like me and movies/shows. I COULD watch Bebop, but I think my 20,000th watch through of the Simpsons starting at season 2 is calling louder.

Is that worth tens of dollars or more of debt? You have to answer that for yourself.

I would not trade my college experience for ANYTHING. I am who I am because of it and I’m better off having done it, but that doesn’t mean I think it’s essential for others to do.

It surrounds us with peers, makes us work on our craft in a relatively risk-free environment, struggle and solve problems together. Shows us who we’re working alongside, who we want or don’t want to be like.

Did it HAVE to be Art college? No. Would I recommend going to Art college if you’re interested in a career as a professional artist? Honestly no.

Art college/college in general, I feel, have the most impact on us by the situation it puts us in.

Also the people I met at RMCAD are my closest friends, professional peers, and my wife.

The skills I learned there I still use today and they contribute to me having a stable job I love and a roof over my head and food and stuff.

So I’d say going to Art college was invaluable for me, but…

My most valuable takeaways from Art College were really how to grow and learn which I think comes down more to how we individually do and process things. It’s changed how I observe the world around me, how I interact with people, and who I fundamentally am as a person.

There are a million and one things you can do with an art degree, and almost all of them don’t require an art degree.

I’d say that having a Bachelor’s degree has paid off for me more than the fact that it’s a BFA in 2D Animation so that part has been worth it?
