regardless of what you decide, definitely treat yourself to something that people like and that feels quality. soldering, especially as a beginner, is highly influenced by the quality of your tool, and it's easy to get discouraged if you're using a bad quality iron.

Someone already mentioned the Pinecil, which I love, and which stores easily and isn't too expensive. This is the most used iron in our house, and we have several. It is easy to handle, and I taught a company workshop where this was the "first iron" for several people.

Nine fluffy yellow balls of golden fluff, barely recognizable as chicks due to some tiny orange beaks and little black eyes visible in a couple places. They snuggle in a semi-pile around a cute red plastic farm truck in a bed of golden wood shavings. They look so comfy it’s like a pile of warm living tiny beanbag chairs.

Vital update!! confirming the baby chicks at the Chicago Museum of Science & Industry remain fluffy & delightful. Always good in troubling times to confirm civilization’s most vital pillars still stand. (I do think Chicago really would crumble without them).

It is so hard to build access and gather tools! Hopefully you find a way some time, whether you make this one or not.

Having done both, I feel like I enjoy crochet a lot more and have no idea why people get weird about knitting vs crochet. Plus, there are sometimes ergonomic reasons for someone to opt for crochet only! And both are good!

It definitely helps for a table loom with a lot of shafts. I was designing really complicated patterns and then realized I was never going to be able to execute them without assistance, so I built this. I'm currently weaving someone else's 8 shaft pattern and it's great--you can really zone out.

A video! Clicking the little buttons causes the pick to advance. Blues are levers that should be flipped, whites are ones that shouldn't, and reds are ones that were previously down but now should be up. The color shifts slightly on each pick. This helps a lot in keeping track of the pattern.
