So much genre tv scripting before and after relies on a character saying “this is happening” and everyone else saying “no, you are crazy” and Picard almost always starts or quickly gets to a place of “I respect you deeply, you wouldn’t be here if you were an idiot, let’s look into this.”

One of my favorite things about Star Trek is when Beverly Crusher is like Jean-Luc, I know this sounds crazy but we’re all trapped inside a dog’s dream, and Picard — responsible for thousands of lives — is like, Beverly you are my best friend obviously I believe you were are making this top priority

It's just not clear to modern audiences how close to poverty women of the time lived and how little they could do about it. On the other hand if there was ever a time to make media about being very tenuously middle class and having few legal protections or safety nets in your life this is it.

Something I always found a bit lacking in various P&P adaptations is that Mrs. Bennetts desire to marry off her daughters is often played for laughs. The very precarious financial position the Bennetts ladies face is not always clear. If anyone could subtly portray this it would be Olivia Coleman.
