Having a self aware moment I just typed like a small essay about a fictional character that I’ve been talking about nonstop for many years. nice.

Now, if only my art and writing could convey this in the way I understand it so I could share it easily with others! I want to do him justice in the way that I see him

His dedication to his family should not be understated. instead he turns into a “gentle beast who thinks he’s hideous” type character by fans and I just don’t think that’s an accurate read for him myself. You do you but I think he’s written with more complexity than that

In my mind he is more of a character who has tried to single mindedly devote himself to protection, like a Paladin or holy man. It’s hard to do that, which is why he has merienda to be himself and not explode. I just dont think he cares about physical appearances and that’s not his root issue.

I just don’t think I can be convinced that he thinks he’s hideous. He has a fan club? Canonically? I think he does believe he’s undeserving and unworthy, that the punishment and guilt and lack of freedom to be himself is something he deserves. He’s living a life of repentance.

All that said, I genuinely don’t think Katakuri finds his mouth to be ugly nor have a complex about it like Pudding does about her eye. His hiding was for convenience and protection of his family. He can easily take any insults that are thrown at him. He doesn’t reveal his mouth to shock Luffy.

But which daughter does she put on parade for marriage? Pudding, the pretty one, the one whose appearance matters. Big Mom is more practical than people give her credit for, in my opinion. She doesn’t just randomly call her children ugly. Pudding had a role to play and needed to be pretty.

And something I find very interesting about this is the dichotomy between how daughters and sons are raised.

Big Mom has plenty of ugly sons. why would she only tell Katakuri to cover up? Because she didnt, lol. He did that to himself.

He didn’t cover his mouth because Big Mom said he was ugly. He covered it because of the cause and effect from Brûlée’s injury at what he can only interpret as his fault. He takes the burden of his entire family’s safety upon his shoulders—he didn’t need mama to force him to do any of it.

Katakuri was born during the rocks era, so I think Big Mom was actually neglectful towards him and his siblings rather than highly controlling of them like she was towards Pudding. Katakuri had to become the adult. He covered his mouth of his own volition because of the reaction others have to it.

I think there’s a marked difference between how she treated Pudding vs how she treated Katakuri and I find that much more interesting than just assuming they have a similar backstory

It’s a popular headcanon that big mom is the one who told katakuri to cover his mouth but I dunno, I think he’s just insane and holds himself to that standard instead. I don’t think she could care less
