Not actually Riggs. Sorry. I'm not even really a possum, I'm such a fraud. She/her I guess but I'd prefer if you just envisage me as a vague non-corporeal form, or maybe a brain in a fancy jar. With arms for typing & drawing, I suppose.

Drew what I reckon a Snapjaw from Caves Of Qud looks like. Fountain pen and watercolour. #drawing #monster #watercolour #CavesOfQud
06.03.2026 18:52 — 👍 47 🔁 4 💬 1 📌 1There should definitely have been a way out. Did you try auto explore, to make sure there wasn't a diagonal gap that wasn't obvious?
05.03.2026 10:14 — 👍 0 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0The one run I've taken to the end was a chimera where I just ran with whatever I was given. As a chronic over-preparer it was a really great exercise in acceptance. It is tempting to try to create an optimal chimera, though.
04.03.2026 19:55 — 👍 2 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0Depends - I have turned on multiple defects on some runs to go all out. But if it's a single defect I'm inclined to agree with you; hooks for feet is less of a downside as a chimera and it works with multi-weapon fighting. Plus thematically it just feels kinda right to me?
04.03.2026 17:05 — 👍 1 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0Spinning up a Caves of Qud chimera run with as many levels of Unstable Genome as possible is one of my favourite comfort activities. Shit day? Not enough brain left to do much? Let's see what body parts a new character can grow.

They're probably going to lose power at the next election and this risks putting the far right (Reform) in power - they came second in the by election after the Greens, but thankfully they were second by a big margin. So this is a double win.
27.02.2026 12:48 — 👍 0 🔁 0 💬 0 📌 0They self-sabotaged when an actual leftist (who was really popular!) managed to become leader of the party, damning us to Conservative leadership through Brexit & Covid, which towards the end resulted in the prime minister who didn't outlast a lettuce, if you remember that.
27.02.2026 12:48 — 👍 1 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0They fill the same role also - supposedly centre left, actually neolib and more recently trending towards neocon corporate cheerleaders. They largely stand for nothing other than being the party to vote for when you hate the Conservative Party. A few good people among them, but mostly awful.
27.02.2026 12:48 — 👍 0 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0Effectively, for Americans: Our Labour Party saw your Democratic Party grinding itself into irrelevance, and decided to try to overtake them. They have form for this, they've been obsessed with turning this place into a panopticon for at least 2 decades.
27.02.2026 12:48 — 👍 0 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0You can probably imagine the two parties' takes on Palastine. The Green stance won them a lot of votes in the last council (local) elections, including from the Asian community (who traditionally tend to be Labour voters).
27.02.2026 12:48 — 👍 1 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0Also worth noting: Labour has heavily courted transphobes. The Greens (not new, but only recently a serious contender) had a bit of internal drama due to terf members a few years back, which ended in favour of not being awful transphobes, and they have only grown in popularity since.

26.02.2026 23:34 — 👍 1 🔁 0 💬 0 📌 0Some neurological conditions are also frequently misdiagnosed as mental illnesses (ADHD & autism are often misdiagnosed as general and social anxiety), which also muddies the water.
26.02.2026 11:07 — 👍 0 🔁 0 💬 0 📌 0What can confuse matters: Neurological conditions can contribute to causing mental illnesses, or have them as symptoms. Lots of people suffer from depression or anxiety due to the strain of their condition and coping with existing in a society built for a different type of brain.
26.02.2026 11:07 — 👍 1 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0If you become depressed or anxious due to chance or external circumstance, you can take medication or get therapy, work through them, and they can go away. You can reduce or end the treatment and not have the symptoms immediately return.
26.02.2026 11:07 — 👍 0 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0Tourettes is much like autism or ADHD - it's how the person's brain works, it's a permanent part of them. When people thought of these as illnesses they did terrible things in an attempt to cure things that are not curable.
26.02.2026 11:07 — 👍 0 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0Miscategorising permanent neurological conditions as mental illness has led to a lot of misunderstandings and poor treatment. You can't really "treat" a condition like this (i.e. it won't go away), but you can potentially manage it. Management may or may not be medicinal in nature.
26.02.2026 11:07 — 👍 0 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0Epilepsy used to be considered a mental illness, but no one categorises it that way now. Other neurological conditions are part way through that same change, in terms of how they're understood by both professionals & the public.
26.02.2026 11:07 — 👍 0 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0I've been gradually leaning towards the conclusion you've already come to. The other option feels increasingly selfish, as I think we're headed for a shortage of good jobs, and then later a shortage of capable people.
26.02.2026 03:35 — 👍 1 🔁 0 💬 0 📌 0I've been thinking about the value of this work a lot recently, as more & more experienced devs seem to be using LLMs rather than handing things over to/working with less experienced devs. Because they find it fun again - presumably they were burnt out or had gotten bored of coding.
26.02.2026 03:35 — 👍 1 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0On a more positive note though, I have found I enjoy and value the leadership work more than I expected to. Knowing I'm giving several people a good work environment and a chance to grow their skill sets is pretty fulfilling, and I've been getting better at handing work over to people.
26.02.2026 03:35 — 👍 1 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0Part of why I've stuck with my current role despite many issues is that I'm in charge, but I also still get to do technical work in an area I love because it happens to be an area no one else wants to do. It's very lucky, and I know I'll probably have to pick one way or the other when I leave.
26.02.2026 03:35 — 👍 1 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0That closing point - I haven't felt like I really inhabit a game world for so long. My brain is always partially in Qud now... which sound like something a status effect from the game might do. It's an absolute masterpiece and I'm so happy to see a new batch of people discover it.

25.02.2026 10:42 — 👍 3 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0My gut feel is that there were several separate root causes to this, but the way it spread around the UK initially was almost entirely between a particular set of liberal journalists and I can entirely believe they were in this group, or a similar one.
