Perhaps you'd better read Orwell's lesser known short piece 'The Living of an Elephant' or perhaps his novel 'Up and In in Paris and London'.

Fantastic gig tonight by Ron Sexsmith and band at the beautiful Cadogan Hall. If there's a more talented songwriter around at the moment they'd have to be brilliant to better Ron. Come back to town soon! @ronsexsmith.bsky.social

When are you in the UK? I should check the website I guess.

I presume there's an equally shouty message directed at car drivers who run red lights in there huge killing machines.

What is with MAGA republicans and insane asylums?

Why did the toaster pop up?
Because it saw the kitchen sink.

The road adjoining mine has some bollards - it's amazing how often they get hit, out of the ground, by car drivers. But yes - a small investment would yield decent results.

Car/van/lorry drivers are acutely aware of the need not to block the road, but their solution is always to block the pavement and or cycle path. There's rarely ever any enforcement.

Given drivers that kill - an all too common occurrence in the UK - don't get life, or anywhere near it, it's a bit steep to go after cyclists that kill.

It's a real treat to cycle there, on my last cycling trip there I was hardly ever on a road, around 96% of my travels were on a dedicated cycle lane. Incredible.

Yes! As is seeing a load of vehicles squeeze past me, only for them to see me cruise past them as they queue at the lights.

You're right - Tories & reform want higher speed limits, no LTNs, no cycle lanes, and more pollution.

Dramatic fall in London’s levels of deadly pollutants after Ulez expansion People in capital breathing much cleaner air, with significant improvements in capital’s most deprived areas

A good news story.

I saw the skeleton of a mammoth at the Musee de Confluence, in Lyon in December. It was colossal. Can't quite imagine the creature hiding behind a desk, but enjoyed the story nonetheless.

The "supposed safety benefits with autobesity" do not translate to cyclists or pedestrians who, faced with a collision with such obese vehicles, are much more likely to face death than serious injury.

17.01.2025 17:31 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

I doubt it. It certainly hasn't in London.

And the makers of this violent vehicle add bull bars on the front, just to make sure that anyone with whom it collides is obliterated, if the sheer size and weight doesn't get them first.

It's just a price on movement in a motor vehicle - all other modes of movement are unaffected. It's not a tax.
Congestion charging in London has aided movement - less congestion on the streets, more frequent buses, better tube frequency, better cycle provision & more enjoyable walking.

If NYC follows London's example and ploughs the money raised into better, more regular, cleaner and efficient public transport I'm sure it will be a success. Also publicise drops in air pollutants when they are available.

Absolutely agree - a car is a car, not a bus. A EV SUV carrying one, rarely two people, has no right to travel in the bus lane.

Interesting that the article leads with "one traffic death per month" which takes the human being out. Surely better to lead with "one person killed per month....."
