We also report evidence of infection with & exposure to USUV & WNV in a broad range of bird species. All data can be found via → www.pathogensportal.nl. Big thanks to all researchers, volunteer bird ringers, citizen scientists & zoos for this collaborative effort! 4/4

Monitoring also revealed local WNV circulation in birds & mosquitoes in 2020, crucial for identifying the first known autochthonous human cases. Our new findings show this wasn’t a one-off: WNV neutralizing antibodies are recurrently found in resident birds at multiple sites in the country. 3/4

When this effort started, mosquito-borne viruses weren’t really seen as a risk in temperate NL. Today, we show that USUV has persisted locally for at least 7 years. Some transmission seasons are more intense than others, likely linked to climate & availability of susceptible hosts. 2/4

Beautiful phylogenomic study of Maverick transposons of vertebrates: @josegabrielnb and @ArisKatzourakis conclude that Mavericks represent an ancient lineage of mostly aquatic dsDNA viruses, which integrated into animal host genomes and have persisted for ~ 419 million years!
