Had the exact same experience today. I ended the call by asking if they were a human or an AI -- I was genuinely not sure. They confirmed they were an AI. The last time I called the same company, I had spoken to humans in a call center in the Philippines. We've reached the tipping point on this one.

I feel like there's something kind of interesting that some of the highest profile Silicon Valley firms (Tesla, OpenAI, Palantir, Anduril) have outrageous valuations given their current revenue that seem in no small part predicated in them taking control of the United States government

Same Cart, Different Price: Instacartβs Price Experiments Cost Families at Checkout - Groundwork Collaborative
In May, Human Rights Watch released a report showing how gig platforms use opaque algorithms to erode workers' wages.
Now a new investigation finds Instacart is running AI price experiments: charging different people different prices for the *same* groceries, sometimes by more than 23%.

There are a lot of practical and material answers to these questions, but underlying all of them is an atrophying of our civic identity that predates Trump and reaches far beyond America.

Interesting thread.
I suspect the fracturing of the media landscape has a lot to do with this inability to channel political energies into decisive action. The People needs a mirror to see itself in. Itβs hard to do that with scattered shards, an increasing number of which are purposely warped.

15 years ago, America allowed SCOTUS to declare corporations unparalleled power in the Citizens United decision. 15 years ago, Obama was busy drone striking civilians and building up Tom Homan's ICE. This country has been losing the long game by refusing to acknowledge it exists.

I just read a clearly AI-fueled or AI-written book in my academic niche, and while I stumble to finish it, I predict that future historiography will have literature categories and markers like *published post 2024* or *published ante 2024*. Our days will be seen as the barrier between these worlds.

Mark Carney is quietly giving sweeping new powers to his ministers β Toronto Star
Sneaking a change of this magnitude into a 600-page bill that will not get parliamentary scrutiny raises a red flag, Althia Raj writes.
