"is that a challenge?"

"a promise."

there's a startled pause that lasts less than one second, and then oikawa's loud, vibrant laughter fills the phone.

"idiot," he says, a soft, affectionate snort escaping him.

"you better take good care of it, iwa-chan," oikawa tells him, "because i'll be coming back for it."

iwaizumi smiles, heart feeling light for the first time in the last ten hours.

"it is not," oikawa automatically retorts. and then: "of course i took yours too. i'm wearing it right now. that's why you have mine. it was only fair."

something swells inside iwaizumi's throat, something that feels like tears but also like warmth.

"i stole it," oikawa says in a 'duh' tone, as if it was obvious. which, iwaizumi thinks, it actually is.

"you could've taken mine too, asshole," he says, thumb stroking the familiar '1' he's seen over oikawa's back during the last (their last) year. "this is a shitty present."

iwaizumi exhales loudly through his nose, his hand closing around the soft fabric of the jersey he's found neatly folded in his wardrobe not even three minutes ago.

he gives in.

"how on earth did you get it?"

"𝘴𝘰," oikawa says, slow and self-satisfied, the sound of dozens of voices in different languages and airport announcements surrounding him, "did you like my present?"

four, actually, because oikawa's absence stings like red-hot pins and this morning iwaizumi's run has been longer than usual, as if physical exhaustion could help soothe his aching heart.

it hasn't.

"so?" he asks.

"come on, iwa-chan," oikawa replies, still cheerful, from thousands of miles away. "i know you like the back of my hand. you must have come home from your morning run thirty minutes ago."

"so. did you like my present?"

"what present," iwaizumi asks, because the same way there hasn't been a single day in which oikawa's let him take the easy path, there hasn't been a single day in which iwaizumi has given in to oikawa's shittiness without pulling up a fight first.

iwaizumi grunts, not dignifying the question with an actual answer. he guesses he should feel lucky oikawa isn't weaponizing his admission about missing him, although by the way they had hugged each other last night at the airport, iwaizumi knows he'd have enough ammo of his own if it came to that.

"iwa-chan," oikawa says, his voice sounding cheery and a little smug over the background noise of what must be his first layover. "i am 𝘱𝘭𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘺 decent but when have i ever let you do anything in peace?"

oikawa's only be gone for ten hours when he calls iwaizumi up.

"what," iwaizumi says, picking his phone. "it's been less than half a day. you could at least have the fucking decency to let us miss you in peace."

i think the funniest thing in this scenary is that uncles matsuhana would surprisingly be the normal ones and call her by her name 😂😂😂
