Ebright's turn towards white supremacy is so astonishing to me. I did my PhD in a protein-DNA binding lab and knew Ebright's later work pretty well. It was always solid biochemistry that I pulled a lot of ideas from.

If academics obviously thought I was a huge idiot I would simply take the L and move on with my life rather than broadcast it to the world, but I guess I'm just built different.

Also ARS research stations are in rural communities and provide some of the best, most stable jobs in their regions. My coworkers frequently commuted from an hour+ away from tiny tiny towns in Iowa.

I worked at the National Animal Disease Center in Ames, IA for a few years, where we had one of the largest prion disease research centers in the world. We had people doing work on diseases of cattle, pigs, chickens, you name it. Truly infuriating shit.

For all their talk about supporting farmers and people in rural communities, the kinds of damage they're doing kills off work on maximizing crop yields, fighting diseases of livestock, and work as unifying as fighting off Dutch Elm disease.

The USDA's research program, the Agriculture Research Service (ARS), is I believe the largest and most productive research arm of the US government. Truly useful research at every level in a way fascists cannot understand.
