Good idea. Maybe we could make it retroactive too, and amortized, like a property tax ;)

Not to mention they kick you out "for their kid to move in" once rent control gets too good of a deal

This was the best thing we had going in terms of solving the housing shortage.

Affordability Andy and the gang are going to screw over young people and renters

What history tells us about Halifax's budget debate - Halifax Examiner For democracy hobbyists, municipal taxation is the best game. The stakes are stark and the mechanisms of policy are relatively straightforward.Β  Currently, in HRM, we’re at an especially black-and-whi...

Robie Street heritage demolitions and Erica Hilton's death are not related - Halifax Examiner Hilton’s death was the result of a domino effect of tragic circumstances, but the Friends of Halifax Common would have you believe the Robie Street expansion project was a factor.

People say the opposite in reverse though!

I would posit that it was always just cheap talk, so why not talk a big game while your at it

I think a lot of people want Nova Scotia's austerity budget to be about reverse class warfare, or trickle down economics. But the biggest single cause of a big deficit is the HST cut last year. That wasn't about helping the rich

"Ample" here is generous. Current under construction stock accounts for only about half our estimated housing shortage. So...

What's better: Ferries or LRT? We're going to choose neither

Tearing down built units is insane and only a planning department could think that

24.02.2026 21:40 β€” πŸ‘ 12    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

An obvious case to make the equivalent units deeply affordable, and thus money losing for the property owner

No. Cost becomes sunk, with no effect on marginal use. Not that gas tax does much (tolls would be better)

Ironic to see *this government* taxing Nova Scotians trying to get to work

Also they all know the politics, they’d love to cut shit, but they feel betrayed and set up by the guy who’s supposed to lead them

Excellent write up from Sam here. Makes me wonder how much smoother and productive this budget would be with him as Mayor

21.02.2026 13:43 β€” πŸ‘ 15    πŸ” 1    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

But then we might not even have the traffic needed to justify the budget breaking projects!

Should be cautious about irreversible decisions, but we don’t need to β€œsell to private developers” as the only alternative. Many options, and the rail cut is the real gem imo

20.02.2026 17:23 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

Yep. Prince Rupert works as a remote port, but west coast is a different ball game, since most of the containers need to take rail to get to the midwest/east coast anyway

Tonnage can be skewed by bulk cargo, but yes! Halifax's port has barely grown in the past 3 decades, a golden age of container shipping. Makes me think we invest too much in the *idea* of us as a port city, including prime downtown land and grade-separated right of way through the peninsula

Can't be thrilled with the trend. Long distance growth has been trending down - just turned negative
