On this date in 2012 Red Sox Captain Jason Varitek announces his retirement at a press conference in Fort Myers Fl. after 15 seasons with the Sox. He was a 3x AS, 2X WS Champion and the 1st Catcher to catch 4 No-Hitters.

Bruce Hurst keeps his hand warm between pitches against the NY Mets during Game 1 of the 1986 World Series. The Red Sox defeated the Mets 1-0 that day. Hurst made 3 Starts during the Series going 2-0, with a 1.96 ERA, if the Sox won he would’ve been named WS MVP.

1949 All Star Game Starting Pitchers Mel Parnell of the Boston Red Sox and Warren Spahn of the Boston Braves. That season Parnell started 33 Games going 25-7, leading the AL in Wins, ERA 2.77, Complete Games 27, Innings Pitched 295.1 and WAR 8.0.

Will Middlebrooks 2012 Pawtucket Red Sox Baseball Card. That season in 24 Games at Pawtucket he hit .333 with 9 HR’s, 27 RBI’s and a 1.057 OPS. Called up to Boston, in 75 Games he hit .288, with 15 HR’s, 54 RBI’s, and a .835 OPS. Sadly his career quickly went downhill after that.

Ted Williams and Jim Thorpe engage in an arm wrestling match in NY City 1952. Thorpe considered the greatest athlete in the world in the early 1900’s won Gold Medals at the Olympics and played professional Baseball, Basketball and Football. He would pass away at the age of 65 the following yr.

The Red Sox purchased Joe Rudi and Rollie Fingers for $1 Million each from the Oakland A’s June 15, 1976. 3 days later they were returned to the A’s without getting into a game, as Commissioner Bowie Kuhn determined it was not in the best interest of Baseball.

Happy Heavenly Birthday to Frank Malzone who passed away at the age of 85 in 2015. Malzone played for the Red Sox from 1955-65, was a 6x AS and 3x GG winner. After his playing career he was a Scout and Instructor for the Sox, spending over 60 years with the Organization.

Happy 73rd Birthday to Luis Aponte who the Red Sox signed as an Amateur FA in 1973. Aponte played parts of 4 seasons in Boston, 1980-83, in 85 Games he was 8-6, with a 3.02 ERA, 7 Saves and a 4.0 WAR.
