Light pollution and the marine world
YouTube video by UNSW Science Light pollution and the marine world

Light pollution is an underappreciated and growing threat to marine #biodiversity. It already affects ~22% of global coastlines and can reach the seafloor.

This video, made with #UNSW, #ADSA, and #DCCEEW, highlights why marine #lightpollution matters ๐ŸŒŠ๐ŸŒ๐Ÿงช

The world feels rough right now

So please enjoy this shrimp, filmed off Cozumel, Mexico. It may be a larval reef shrimp, but we donโ€™t know what species or how long it lives or what it eats. The world is still full of wonder and beauty and mystery.

A hand drawn image in black and white pen showing a cross-section of a coastal landscape illuminated by light pollution. The top of the image shows vertical light lines extending into the sky, above five semi-circles that look like hills. Below these hills are horizontal lines and circles that are emitting yellow texta light lines downwards. Moving down the page, under these yellow lines is the sea surface and small boats. Under the waters surface are schools of fish outlined, and at the bottom of the page are seaweeds extending up to the surface.

Over 20% of the worldโ€™s coastlines experience #lightpollution, yet we have limited knowledge of its impacts on #marineecology and key habitat-forming organisms ๐Ÿงช๐ŸŒŠ๐Ÿ’ก๐ŸŒ

How climate change could flip marine fluxes in the Arctic: reshaping entire ecosystems The Arctic is warming faster than almost anywhere else on Earth, with the Barents Sea experiencing the most dramatic loss of seasonal sea ice. As the ice retreats and the Polar Front shifts northwards

New research shows for the first time that #ClimateChange could fundamentally alter the benthicโ€“pelagic exchange โ€“ the flow of #carbon and nutrients between the seafloor and open ocean waters vital for food webs, marine life and carbon cycling ๐Ÿ‘‡

I don't trust them, they are a squid in the grass...

With a mantle length of 22 mm, Grass Squids (Pickfordiateuthis pulchella) are one of the tiniest species of squid. They aren't quite as small as pygmy squids which belong to a different order.
