I had the same reaction to a boss, once. Later found out he was guilty of several counts of fraud and not paying social security taxes for his employees. I'm either psychic, or these sorts have obvious tells that large numbers of people just aren't picking up on.

I obviously don't understand the term "charismatic leader" because every time I've heard one of them speak, they remind me of trying to swallow soggy bread. It's a visceral, physical reaction. I've yet to manage listening to more than 20-30 seconds of any speech.

There are videos online of the shooting. It does appear to be at least one shot to the upper chest/neck area, and there's a lot of blood. I wouldn't recommend looking for the videos if you're not sure you want to see that. It doesn't look good, and I'm not sure how he survives.

I also enjoyed The Gone World by Tom Sweterlitsch. It's sci-fi and also includes some body horror, though I didn't find it as overtly scary as some others, it's still a good read.

I'm not sure how old any of those books, are rarely check publishing date, I just read what looks good in the moment.

A couple that are more removed, but still keep that cosmic/eldritch horror feel are T Kingfisher's The Hollow Places, a modern fantasy(?) which includes some body horror and a sort of snark/humor that Kingfisher is known for.

One very direct Lovecraftian book I've read recently is called The Ballad of Black Tom. It's a retelling of one of Lovecraft's tales from the PoV of a black man. It was good.
