"The Trump Administration's unlawful removal of the Register of Copyrights follows a pattern of targeting library and information leaders in nonpartisan positions. Congress must stand up for its Library and intervene to counter this dangerous campaign to weaken institutional knowledge and professionalism." - ALA President Cindy Hohl.
This firing follows a pattern of targeting library and information leaders in nonpartisan positions. Congress MUST show up for its library and intervene.

Equitable access to information is a HUMAN RIGHT.
Libraries and museums are vital institutions.
Trump & republicans want an uneducated populace (because it's easier to quell dissent that way).
This is yet another attack by the Trump admin on the rights of all who call the US home.

When the crucial library services funded by IMLS are gone shortly, no library can play the "neutral" card anymore, no matter how much they've stuck their feet in the mud about it.
Libraries need to be clear and precise why these services are gone: Presidential orders.

Federal judge orders Colorado district to return banned books to school libraries
The order prohibits the school board from removing books βbecause the district disagrees with the views expressed therein or merely to further their preferred political or religious orthodoxy.β
Good news from Colorado: A U.S. District Judge ordered a school district to restore library books they banned by next week, prohibiting the district from further restrictions on access to books that the school board objects to politically.

A square graphic depicts a close-up photo of the spines of old books on a shelf. Some of the books have colored slips of paper sticking out of their tops. Overlaid on this picture is a white rectangle with black text on it, reading βThe Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) is the primary source of federal support for the nation's libraries and museums; its funding helps public, school, and academic libraries deliver services that enable libraries and communities to thrive. RBS acknowledges and affirms the importance of IMLS in supporting the programs and services that help make libraries a vital part of our communities, and we urge its continued funding from the federal government.β

ALA response to White House assault on IMLS
To dismiss the mission of an agency that advances opportunity and learning is to dismiss the aspirations and everyday needs of millions of Americans. And those who will feel that loss most keenly live in rural communities.β―
As seedbeds of literacy and innovation, our nationβs 125,000 public, school, academic and special libraries deserve more, not less support. Libraries translate 0.003% of the federal budget into programs and services used by more than 1.2 billion people every year. Show Up for Our Libraries, ALA American Library Association, #ForOurLibraries
President Trump's executive order to eliminate the Institute of Museum & Library Services would have disastrous effects for communities nationwide. We call on all Americans who value reading & learning to reach out to their elected leaders.

The library and the post office are the only two systems we have that circulate things widely and to everyone, no matter who they are or what they believe. The library is the only one that, for now, is not forced to pay for itself at point of sale. Attacks on IMLS are attacks on every one of us.
