High on a Northumberland hillside near the Roman fort of Bremenium and the ancient road we call Dere Street are the remains of a mausoleum. It is probably the finally resting place of a high-raking Roman soldier and a couple of its stones still feature enigmatic carvings #TombTuesday

Scottish place names are full of ghosts. They describe fields that are no longer there, forests long felled. Gaelic carries the memory of people, land, and place.

Durham and Cardiff universities to cut hundreds of jobs The Russell Group universities, which also plan to cut courses such as nursing and music, are struggling with a funding shortfall

History of UK HE in the last 30 years follows the repeated sequence (1) politicians demand universities act in a certain way (2) uni managements comply against academic misgivings (3) effects are uncongenial for politicians (4) pundits denounce universities for acting that way, echoed by politicians

Watching Labour struggle to deal with Elon Musk now is just very much of a piece with the wider tendency of the liberal/social democratic establishment to be incapable of dealing with global ideological realignment out of sync with the geopolitical architecture their predecessors built.

It’s weird how things went from student protests at the hike in fees in 2010 - I recall parliament forced to meet behind barricades - to students using food banks in 2024. Where’s the student/campus movement fighting this?

During Great Historical Revolutions of The Past That Get People All Excited, somewhere around 70 to 80 percent of the population just stayed at home & grew their own food until the worst passed*.

That won't happen now.

*Or, if they were unlucky, turned up on their doorstep & killed them.

Notice that all these graphs start shooting up at the time of widespread adoption of fossil fuels.

This is why "Ponzi Scheme" is a useful frame to understand modernity - HUGE benefits, the illusion they will continue forever, but the reality that all the gains are hollow, & doomed to collapse.
