Together— a good-not-great debut that avoids embellishing the commitment theme and skirts around a hard push into grue and gore. Script a tad blunt. Brie and Franco, true genre performers with gifted comedic timing in the film’s blackest moments.

Sweetheart, Sweetheart — favourite book of the year so far (after King Sorrow). Late 70s English village life disrupted by a series of mishaps at a cottage. Taylor’s prose reminds me of books I read as a kid, sprawling, hazy delightful England… that’s full of terror. Strong recommend!

Having recently finished the latest Sarah Pinborough, I jumped into a much older horror tome— Bernard Taylor’s Sweetheart, Sweetheart— and they’re such perfect companion reads. English cottages, nefarious goings-on, steeped in atmos! Love when this sort of just happens!

My brother and I used to rent this ALL THE TIME from our local corner shop! Firmly believe this was one of my first “woah this kids movie is FREAKING ME OUT” films. Love it!

Nightmare Matinee has teens at a horror movie turning into the characters?! Sounds right up my street!

W O W… Ghost Eaters is one of my favourite horror novels of the last decade. Completely transported me to another world and its descriptions I think about in a weekly basis. Excited to see how some of this translates!

This podcast 100% got me through the early days of the pandemic. I absolutely love it and am excited if the lads, ahem ahem, pick it up again for future episodes ☺️

I try to read widely for work but my heart is rooted (rotted?) in horror, esp this time of year. Teenage summertimes were when I fell in love with the genre (and probs why I only wanna re-read Stephen King right now.)

Gosh, yes! I had forgotten about Rhianna’s pod. I did listen to the episode she did with Mike which was such fun.

I’ve guested on 3 pods now and it’s such a blast actually DOING it and then learning how it’s recorded, edited, all that stuff. Deffo contemplated doing one!

I am very excited for another DeVaughn pod!! Wahoo!

Also, I was wondering: do you have any recommendations for podcasts… ABOUT making a podcast? I’d really love to hear from my favourite film podders specifically so not sure if you’re aware of any offshoot eps folks have done? Thanks!

It’s a LOT— but it’s tough ‘cause those things are genuinely interesting and kinda fun. It’s the basics of having the time to dedicate to doing it all. Ah!

It’s beyond disheartening. As the idea of branching into TikTok/youtube/facebook groups (to counter the Google search drop) AND writing for my site became overwhelming, I’ve decided to stop writing for my blog altogether. (It breaks my heart but I feel way less stressed, now.)
