Economics is a branch that studies how people behave out of rational self-interest, but there are other factors that contribute to people’s decision making. So no, economics cannot predict exactly how large populations will behave in every given circumstance.

Money in politics continues to increase. Citizens United gave corporations the right to spend unlimited money to promote candidates or positions on issues. Then there is also the issue of PACs and election contributions. We need publicly funded elections.

Yeah I’m aware of Norway’s vast oil supply. But there are other Scandinavian countries with very similar governing systems that don’t have excess oil supply.

I think there are ways of avoiding a swing to the radical right just because a country experiences economic hardships.

Yes, and some government involvement in private industry doesn’t have to turn into fascism (or full-blown socialism) and could be done (successfully) for a genuinely good cause. Are you familiar with Alaska’s oil reserves being owned by the people of Alaska? They get a check every time it’s drilled.
