Our team member Magdalena is currently in Sweden on Erasmus+ mobility. 👩‍🏫 This Saturday she attended the premiere of Anton Dvořák’s "Rusalka" at the Royal Swedish Opera in Stockholm. 🎼🎶 Alongside the performance, she noted intriguing details in the theatre’s architecture. 🏰⛲️⚜️

Last week, our doctoral research associate Goran Stanić visited the University of Naples Federico II, where he gave a guest lecture entitled "Franciscans and coexistence during the Bosnian war in the 1990s" in the class "Ethnic conflicts and national integrations in Modern and Contemporary History".

📜Interimperial persons appear in unexpected places. A plaque in Warsaw commemorates Francis II Rákóczi, the Hungarian noble who rebelled against the Habsburgs and died in exile in Ottoman domains.

Imperial capitals often harbour neglected legacies. In London, Jeremy found this trace of diplomatic relations between the UK and the Republic of Texas, which lasted between 1836 and 1846 before being absorbed into the USA as a proslavery southern state in the context of the Abolitionist movement.

The National History Museum presents the story of the Second Mexican Empire through puppets depicting Maximilian of Austria, Charlotte of Belgium, and Benito Juárez, the leader of the Mexican republicans. From visiting key memory sites to extensive archival research and discussions with scholars and artists, Adi explored how these figures remain deeply ambivalent in Mexican memory—entangled in debates on imperialism, colonialism, and nationalism.🔎

This iconic building the, along with the Central Campus of the University City, was proclaimed the World Heritage by UNESCO. The building is at the bottom, with blue skies with speckles of clouds above.

The imperially decorated rooms of Chapultepec Castle, once used by Maximilian of Austria and Charlotte of Belgium during their brief reign, showcase their opulent legacy. Our predoctoral researcher, Adi Tufek, spent a month at UNAM investigating the collective memory of Maximilian of Austria and Charlotte of Belgium, rulers of the Second Mexican Empire.

My review of Greg Eghigian's excellent cultural history of the UFO phenomenon has been published in the Journal of the History of the Behavioral Sciences. The book is fantastic - a compassionate treatment of a marginalized and sometimes ridiculed cultural phenomenon that deserves meticulous study.
