I'm puzzled by a bit of Cavell in The Claim of Reason. I'd like to know what others think. Cavell writes: "the surmise is that the idea of duty toward others as human beings might itself be a restriction on my knowledge of their existence...And loving them might also be a restriction? Yes" (435)
