There's a bunch of naval assets close to Venezuela that normally hang out in the Med, that's not direct action yet but it's well beyond hypothetical.

The best way to get them off the flyer would be to talk to the organizers and say "We will mobilize our much larger base of supporters if you ditch Code Pink". If the Dems aren't willing to do that, then Code Pink probably stays because they're filling a vacuum.

When NIMBYs block an apartment for not being "Affordable enough", they are telling those future residents (who can afford market-rates of new homes) to instead go bid up the price of the existing housing stock. Repeat enough times, and you make the whole city unaffordable.

Our public debate hasn't really advanced to recognizing that it's not a binary, "bike lane vs no". Width matters, but we don't have good language to discuss it.

Even this mixes a lot of different behaviors, though. Like, passing is an important thing (we explicitly acknowledge this for cars, by designing multilane roads, so I don't see why it wouldn't be true for bikes, especially when ebikes can travel substantially faster than a slow acoustic cyclist).

The point of speed enforcement is that you want people to drive slowly all the time, because they don't know whether there's a cop hiding behind a bush with a radar gun. Disclosing it means you need to put enforcement literally everywhere to get the same deterrent effect.

Yeah, and it's most likely driven by stats. They're trying to maximize "# of tickets written" rather than "actual impact on safety" or even "perceived impact on safety".

Enforcing helmet laws is a terrible idea--it's been proven to dramatically reduce cycling, which is the opposite of what we want. Stuff like riding on the back of a scooter I know less about, but honestly, it's kind of niche IMHO--most people are unwilling to do it for obvious reasons.

I'd rather have a cop spend an hour biking up and down Steinway (lots of foot traffic) and ticketing anyone he sees biking on the sidewalk or blowing a red light, rather than having him parked on Northern Boulevard ticketing cyclists who go on a red light with no pedestrians around.

But even if we don't want to recalibrate on that, I'd say more random patrols on residential/commercial streets where pedestrians are frequent, and fewer ticketing stings on major arterials.

If you're a pedestrian, you're much more likely to be injured by a car than by an ebike. People don't _feel_ like that, but it's true. We need policing that understands that and tries to manage public sentiment, not indulge the fear.

Requiring insurance for anything capable of 20mph+ with a motor is fine IMHO, and ticket them if they're in the bike lane. But given the number of injuries they cause (vs. the number of injuries caused by cars), our enforcement priorities are too heavily tilted towards moped enforcement IMHO.
