05.12.2025 18:00 β π 3 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0How do we build on its success to institute pricing elsewhere? Either in other cities or in other parts of NYC

05.12.2025 14:48 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Any liberalism worth the name has to oppose this wholeheartedly. No tiptoeing around it, no playing footsie with it, no saying "Well of course they have a point". The whole thing is inextricably tied up with racial hierarchy.

05.12.2025 13:13 β π 26 π 1 π¬ 1 π 0What a lede on this story: Man who complained about narrowing a road in order to protect pedestrians, so much that the city eventually reversed the change, then kills a woman on that very road with his car www.washingtonpost.com/business/int...
04.12.2025 20:55 β π 557 π 191 π¬ 8 π 18The trash revolution is underway, but the cityβs plan still lets recycling pile up on sidewalks.
If we want cleaner streets and fewer rats, bins must include recyclables (and, while weβre at it, compost too!).
What do you think is a better way to convince antiwar organizers to stop partnering with groups like Code Pink?
04.12.2025 19:34 β π 3 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0There's a bunch of naval assets close to Venezuela that normally hang out in the Med, that's not direct action yet but it's well beyond hypothetical.
04.12.2025 19:14 β π 3 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0The best way to get them off the flyer would be to talk to the organizers and say "We will mobilize our much larger base of supporters if you ditch Code Pink". If the Dems aren't willing to do that, then Code Pink probably stays because they're filling a vacuum.
04.12.2025 19:11 β π 8 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0When NIMBYs block an apartment for not being "Affordable enough", they are telling those future residents (who can afford market-rates of new homes) to instead go bid up the price of the existing housing stock. Repeat enough times, and you make the whole city unaffordable.
24.04.2025 02:28 β π 38 π 6 π¬ 0 π 3I would submit that many people don't know the Democrats suck! It's a real problem tbh.
04.12.2025 17:57 β π 4 π 0 π¬ 2 π 0Our public debate hasn't really advanced to recognizing that it's not a binary, "bike lane vs no". Width matters, but we don't have good language to discuss it.
04.12.2025 17:56 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Whereas riding with a passenger on a bike cargo rack is pretty unsafe and might reasonably be banned.
04.12.2025 17:54 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Even this mixes a lot of different behaviors, though. Like, passing is an important thing (we explicitly acknowledge this for cars, by designing multilane roads, so I don't see why it wouldn't be true for bikes, especially when ebikes can travel substantially faster than a slow acoustic cyclist).
04.12.2025 17:50 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 2 π 0Sounds like the Democratic Party should be organizing their own antiwar rally, so they can exclude the Code Pink types?
04.12.2025 17:47 β π 17 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Itβs the most wonderful time of the year β unless youβre trying to sell a condo in King County. In a brutal blow last month, a fall slump hit home sales while they were already sliding. Listings lingered on the market amid economic uncertainty and still-high mortgage rates, dampening prices across the Seattle area.
Here it's "a brutal blow" that causes "suffering".
04.12.2025 17:08 β π 8 π 0 π¬ 2 π 0The point of speed enforcement is that you want people to drive slowly all the time, because they don't know whether there's a cop hiding behind a bush with a radar gun. Disclosing it means you need to put enforcement literally everywhere to get the same deterrent effect.
04.12.2025 17:07 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0In most sectors, "price of very expensive good falls" would be covered as a win for consumers. www.seattletimes.com/business/rea...
04.12.2025 17:05 β π 29 π 5 π¬ 2 π 1Yeah, and it's most likely driven by stats. They're trying to maximize "# of tickets written" rather than "actual impact on safety" or even "perceived impact on safety".
04.12.2025 16:46 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Enforcing helmet laws is a terrible idea--it's been proven to dramatically reduce cycling, which is the opposite of what we want. Stuff like riding on the back of a scooter I know less about, but honestly, it's kind of niche IMHO--most people are unwilling to do it for obvious reasons.
04.12.2025 16:42 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0I'd rather have a cop spend an hour biking up and down Steinway (lots of foot traffic) and ticketing anyone he sees biking on the sidewalk or blowing a red light, rather than having him parked on Northern Boulevard ticketing cyclists who go on a red light with no pedestrians around.
04.12.2025 16:37 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0But even if we don't want to recalibrate on that, I'd say more random patrols on residential/commercial streets where pedestrians are frequent, and fewer ticketing stings on major arterials.
04.12.2025 16:35 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0If you're a pedestrian, you're much more likely to be injured by a car than by an ebike. People don't _feel_ like that, but it's true. We need policing that understands that and tries to manage public sentiment, not indulge the fear.
04.12.2025 16:33 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 2 π 0Requiring insurance for anything capable of 20mph+ with a motor is fine IMHO, and ticket them if they're in the bike lane. But given the number of injuries they cause (vs. the number of injuries caused by cars), our enforcement priorities are too heavily tilted towards moped enforcement IMHO.
