I love this piece! I feel like I saw it when it came out or at some point since then. For better or worse my life is dangerously close to this because I often refuse to compromise…unfortunately as I get old(er) I’m really conscious of the flaws in my thinking!!!

When I was amNY and actually used to be assigned interviews I had this same thing happen a couple times. (In the same vein, I also once had a guy I’d interviewed for a news article come back to me and say—genuinely pleased—“Great article! You printed the things that I actually said!”

Just got done listening to a podcast of tech folks I really respect talking about how they sometimes use the AI response at the top of a search engine but so often it’s wrong…and I’m just thinking “what the hell are you looking it up for if you know the answer?”

Love the rollercoaster ride of getting a positive response back from a new outlet only to reach the bottom of the email and read “btw we don’t pay you”… How do critics write for no money?? I guess if you’re married or wealthy you can just devote 10–30 hours for free?

NYT games app is one more puzzle shoved in at the top away from losing me…

One of many reasons I’m so frustrated w/ “desktop-class” Safari on my M4 iPad Pro is the continued malfunction of sites like Squarespace. (I know the only one I have to blame for persisting with an iPad-only setup is myself, although work/life constraints make it ideal & somewhat necessary.)

Judging art on its own terms??? What a concept!

As someone whose NHL fandom was born in the Avalanche/Red Wings battles of the late 1990s/early 2000s, I will just say that hockey players don’t forget things. The choads who opted to reveal their true POS colors are going to be on the ice with a lot of guys who don’t forget.

Thankful time difference lets me simply scroll through the batshit insane embarrassment enabled and abetted by one of the two US political parties, an event about which the BBC reports “Analysis: Trump issues patriotic rallying cry with eye on crucial elections.” No one does journalism any more.

Wait till you see how many hotel rooms are available within walking distance of those “theaters.” (Spoiler: the answer is not enough.)

Yeah this is one time I’m really happy to see a bunch of Avs on the losing team.

Hahaha. Well, what can I say, I was young and naïve!

First, thanks for reading book reviews! And second, thanks for the recommendation of Cuthbertson’s book. I had looked it up after doing my review of Cooke’s book and based on your recommendation I’ll be moving it closer to the top of my TBR pile! Take care.

NFC how Industry managed to end up where it is after this latest ep, but Yaz lamenting that she’s soft after burning everyone in her vicinity to the fucking ground is probably the funniest line of this narratively ludicrous, extremely messy, somehow still enjoyable season.

My eyes are not good enough to tell a lot from this angle, but Sabato looked awfully late! Nice to see the first outing, for whatever it’s worth.

First time as an adult that I can recall drinking milk and thinking it was delicious was in Ireland. My Irish friend replied basically, yeah we’re a small country, our cows eat grass, and this wasn’t made to be transported for months before you drink it.

Same. I tried with the biography, but struck out. Had missed the Bonnie and Clyde book though. Will definitely check it out.

Honestly I’d prefer he get it out of the way before the Avs resume play!

I took this photo 6 yrs ago today on the northern edge of Firenze as I went for a coffee after lunch. Walking past the spot this morning I spied a lizard as it flicked its tail and hid among the vines encircling an ancient tree that once shaded the newsstand, which closed a year after the pandemic.

Yeah, wordle is better, though I only spend like 2 minutes tops on it so will waste time on the bee if I feel like my procrastination should be especially pointless. (Though often the bee feels no less pointless than sending pitches that never get acknowledged, though I should do that more often.)

I only do the bee when the total points is less than ~120. It doesn’t eliminate my frustrations, but limits the time I am feeling frustrated lol.

When I saw another person post this screen shot, I nodded, went to the dictionary thinking “huh, I guess there are two Ms and they just don’t realize it” and was shocked.

Sometimes the omissions are baffling but this one has to be close to the bafflingest.

!!!!!! I’m so incredibly excited by this news!!! Are you translating it? I can’t wait to read this. Wow, something to look forward to! It’s a such a great novel.

Yeah, lot of shocking stuff. I knew there’d been turnover since Boris left but honestly pay no attention to it cuz I file a review, file an invoice. And yeah sadly $100/$150 is pretty standard for many places I write. (As for quality I honestly assume anywhere that publishes me has no standards lol)

How the LA Review of Books destroyed itself “All non-profits run on exploitation, but these guys don’t even try to hide it."

I’ve written more than 30 reviews for LARB over 5 yrs & yeah each paid $100, which is crap but a writer has to write. Never heard of most people in this article. Thought I filed some good stuff, but per this piece “working writers” won’t touch LARB. Cool cool. I’ll blame my stagnant career on that.

HBO listing the fantastic, gorgeous, perfectly cast adaptation “My Brilliant Friend” under the sub-hed Squad Goals (um, no) but not Based on a Book really tells you everything you need to know about how things are going in algorithm land.
