Shoot, move, and communicate are three universal skills, but just like shooting might be rifles or airstrikes, and moving might be rucking or driving a tank, communicating could be radios or reports, memos, counselings, etc. Soldiers have to be reasonably effective writers.

Also because a world that exists to tell a story of some kind demands a certain willingness by the author to pare down the worldbuilding to something manageable to consume for the reader. I'm glad Martin has made the decision to shrug at commoners; his books are dense enough as it is.

My kids are generally bad at sneaking around the house because we've never really given them a reason to need to be sneaky, which is usually a good thing except for when your 17 year old wants to go to Senior Sunrise and it sounds like badgers fighting in the hallway at 5:15 in the morning.

For the young guys, this was taken as gospel since OIF-I. So if you feel like there are a lot of military types who are on the edge of performative about feminism, some of it is because we know we've been part of the problem for a long time.

I was up in Ft. Lewis around the same time as a single guy and I think we took it for granted that being in the Pacific NW meant a solid headwind in such a liberal part of the country. Ignore whether we were a bunch of loudmouth boors with oversized egos.

I think between this, a lot of internal military propaganda about what being a combat veteran did for you as a man compared to those worthless libs in college, and media like I Hope They Serve Beer in Hell, yeah, the early 2000s wasn't terribly different IMO.
