Also I think there’s other things that play into this that I don’t wanna get into too much of. I just know one of them being me watching way too much of online people saying one line zingers that come off as “thoughtful” and deep.

3. Stop trying to feel like you need to “win” in conversations.
4. Saying something with conviction does not make the statement true.

Some personal self takeaways:
1. Being a contrarian is not being nuanced.
2. Repeating something someone else said in a different way/with big words is not being insightful, it comes off annoying and pretentious.

Sometimes I even feel like now I have a skewed view of what a debate, or heck, even a normal conversation is supposed to be like.
It skeeves me out sometimes, and I can only imagine how many others like myself have had similar thoughts and experiences.

I think the biggest reason I’m not successful yet is me still wanting to be nuanced and not be confined to a strict binary way of thinking.
However, what ended up happening is that being on Twitter had me ending up conflating nuance with contrarianism.

To this day, I’m still unpacking these things and trying to not be an annoying contrarian in conversations.
Esp. with phrases like “it’s not even that-“ or “I wouldn’t say that-“, which is probably just as bad as “to play devil’s advocate”.
Are am I successful in changing this? Not yet so far.

Eventually the infighting became more and more toxic as time went on and I just had to stop using Twitter
It was only then that I really was able to start seeing the extent of which my constant exposure to these environments affected how I had conversations with others.

Don’t get me wrong, I miss being on there for all the jokes/references and *some* pretty interesting and insightful threads.
But I feel like I picked up on the contrarianism from seeing retweets/threads debating on certain things or infighting, and how I equated more likes/retweets with validity.

I think the biggest damage that being on Twitter has had on me was me turning into a constant contrarian.
As someone who hates it when people “play devil’s advocate”, I just end up doing the same thing, but instead, using different words and repeating myself.
