Because these guys don't CARE if you're an illegal immigrant or a natural-born citizen. Why would they? There's no due process, no consequences if they nab a natural-born, fully legal citizen of the US off the streets purely based on skin color or 'a gut feeling' and ship them to a hell prison.

Cops are literally trained to manipulate information out of you. And for all the chatter I see about their nefarious, underhanded methods for this, the truth is, most don't need to bother, because a lot of you volunteer that shit willingly.

I mean, when I heard EA was getting sold I knew it was dead, they're just beating a dead horse now, I'm mostly sad for the people whose careers got messed with.

Oh I recognize this trope, this is the one where a dumbfuck executive tries to monetize other people's volunteer labor, while vastly overestimating what people would be willing to pay for it (nothing), driving the company they bought off a cliff! It's a sub variant of enshitification. Classic!

And that, again, is a poor description, but any other attempt to explain what I'm picturing seems to result in coming across rather derisively of emotion in general, which is absolutely not my intention.

But I will try anyway. Reacting emotionally or instinctively to the outside world is perfectly normal and I'd argue healthy. Making short term decisions based on these impulses is also normal, if not always healthy. I'm referring to people who don't stop to think even for long-term.

Sadly, I have no direct scientific backup for this. It's only an observation. I'm not even sure how you'd design an experiment around it, to be honest.

I would also like to clarify that it's entirely different from REACTING emotionally or 'rationally'. It's a bit hard to put into words...

I've heard a lot of newer-generation programmers use chatbots as 'rubber ducks', which seems the most appropriate use in that sort of setting. Personally I've only used it as souped up translator, though it's certainly very useful for that (compared to normal translation)

Replacing humans with AI is basically a company entering a race to the bottom. They're betting they can make more profit by cutting as much cost as humanly (or not so humanly) possible than they can by delivering the best cost-value ration in a higher quality class.

Yet again, we can't afford to let LLMs become a source of epistemic grounding for society.

It's like playing a videogame versus watching a playthrough of that videogame. Even if you like the content creator doing the playthrough and they do all the things you would, it's usually not even close to the same experience.

While I do tend to lose focus and thus lose track eventually, the main problems are that it goes significantly slower than when I read myself, AND it doesn't let me automatically build a mental picture the way reading it myself does. I have to actively TRY, and then I lose track.

Having realized this helped me make sense of so much stuff that had me pulling my hair out at the sheer stupidity. Or be shocked that things aren't common knowledge. Or why people find me smart when I point out basic cause-effect chains... or one of a million more

It's similar to the shocking realization there's an entire subsection of humanity that don't use reason in their decision-making process. At all. Their entire decision-making process is just an internal query of: "How do I feel about this" and they respond with whatever their brain responds with.

What we now call "AI" certainly has the potential to be an incredible tool, spotting patterns that human eyes can't manage due to its ability to process massive amounts of data.
Sadly, especially on bachelor-degree level, there's going to be lots of "chatGPT, write me a research paper" type stuff.
