As US-Cuba Tensions Rise, Carney Needs to Flex His ‘Middle Power’ | The Tyee Cubans are facing fuel, food and hospital supply shortages. Canadians can help.

"Until recently, Canadians provided a critical lifeline by bringing medical supplies down to Cuba... it’s been painful telling my Cuban medical friends that Canada’s flights to Cuba have been stopped for several months — right when they need us most." thetyee.ca/Opinion/2026...

A.I. Isn't People How many Reddit posts does it take to learn to read?

Yesterday I wrote about what AI is (math) and isn’t (people) and someone in the comment said it’s the best thing anyone ever wrote about AI. I’m just gonna take that at face value and so should you. www.todayintabs.com/p/a-i-isn-t-...

These Bee Sanctuary Founders Want the World to Join In Many wild bees are endangered, and lack of habitat is a big factor. Here’s how one couple in Ireland is trying to turn the tide.

"We want to use our sanctuary to teach and empower people everywhere to take actions that will help restore native wild bee numbers, and the rest of nature at the same time."

The tragic war in Ukraine has become tragically normal Four years after Russia began its full-scale invasion, the rest of the world is distracted by other news – but the conflict is more violent and devastating than ever

“Four years later, the sirens still scream, and the Russian attacks have become even deadlier.

What’s changed is the world has become accustomed to the war raging in Europe. We’ve come to accept that things are never going back to the way they were before.”

I regularly see people wondering how it's possible that there are so many musicians and writers and film makers and artists from a tiny nation like Iceland.

And the answer is really simple: State funding for art education and artists. I literally get a salary from the government to write books.

The art of translation and why it matters | The Booker Prizes As Tomb of Sand wins the 2022 International Booker Prize, readers and translators tell Sarah Shaffi how translated literature can help us learn more about ourselves and each other

“There are almost certainly stories we’re missing out on by only reading English-language fiction… The more translated fiction we read, the more our view of the world expands.”

CHARLES RAFFERTY
The Problem with Early Warnings

People don't like to leave a party unless the house is actually on fire. Even then, if the flames are far enough away to be pretty, they'll finish their drink, take one more pass at the hors d'oeuvres.
How things happen has always been unclear. Hurricanes begin in a place where no one lives.
Agents of the government start to wear masks. Fascism is a word my neighbors won't use yet. They are following
the law, they say, and the sirens are coming for someone else.
