"It’s so important to have a free press, and it’s nuts we aren’t paying more attention to it."
We @pressfreedom.bsky.social agree. Thank you Jimmy Kimmel.
It’s literally the job of columnists to have opinions. Sacking them for expressing their views not only chills the individual’s speech but free speech in general.

Thinking of the remarkable journalist and editor Jose Rubén Zamora today on his 69th birthday, which he is unjustly spending behind bars for yet another year. We continue to demand his release.

As his health deteriorates in a Hong Kong jail, Jimmy Lai’s detention is now a test of Keir Starmer’s seriousness about human rights – and the government’s willingness to defend its citizens and values abroad.

In @independent.ie, @jodieginsberg.bsky.social & I argue the deliberate, systematic targeting of #Gaza’s journalists is not only an assault on individuals; it is an attack on truth & human rights.
Ireland must do more, urgently, to protect Gaza’s journalists.

The 'Legitimization Cell' scoured Gaza for material to boost Israeli hasbara — including questionable claims that would justify the killing of Palestinian reporters.

So much of what we know about starvation in Gaza is because of reporting by Anas Al-Sharif. Israel targeted and killed him and his entire crew while they were in a press tent outside a hospital. I spoke with @jodieginsberg.bsky.social, head of the CPJ @pressfreedom.bsky.social for @slate.com.

The prevention of international access, the killings of journalists, the targeting of media facilities, the punishment of outlets like Haaretz are part of a deliberate strategy to conceal what is happening in Gaza.

Our statement on the targeted killing of Al Jazeera journalist Anas Al-Sharif and colleagues: Israel is murdering the messengers.
cpj.org/2025/08/isra...
Israel just targeted and killed an entire news crew. This is not "just what happens" to reporters in war. Israel has killed more journalists in the 22 months since October 7 '23 than were killed WORLDWIDE in the 3 years between '20 and '22.
This is murdering the messenger.
cpj.org/2025/08/isra...
Devastated to hear of the killing by Israel of Al Jazeera journalist Anas al-Sharif. This is the latest killing of a journalist whom Israel alleges to be a terrorist without providing any credible proof.

I have been a reporter for 25 years. I know the risks reporting in war zones. This is not that situation. This is systematic silencing by Israel.
If we do not act now, there will be no one left in Gaza to tell anyone’s story.

The Committee to Protect Journalists is gravely worried about the safety of Al Jazeera Arabic’s Gaza correspondent Anas Al-Sharif, who is being targeted by an Israeli military smear campaign, which he believes is a precursor to his assassination.

I spoke to Charles Sennott, founder of The GroundTruth Project and Report for America, about the threats facing the media in the United States - and how each individual attack might not feel worrying but when you add them together "what you've got is a juggernaut that's right in front of you."
