17.02.2025 12:21 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0A very rare Alexander III penny w/reverse having 22 total points to the stars. Current thinking is the number of points indicates a specific mint. This coin could be from a small mint in St Andrews, but since so rare, there are doubts if one truly existed as more should be found
16.02.2025 14:47 β π 4 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0The provincial and temporary mint in Carlisle in 1249 is the rarest mint found from all of Henry III long cross pennies. Out of the 24,921 pennies recovered from the Colchester and Brussels hoards, only 184 were from Carlisle (<0.75%)

Here is an Aethelred II βhelmet typeβpenny originally in the Duke of Argyll collection purchased for Β£7 by Spink in the late 1930s.

Here is a quick guide to determine if you find an Edward I, II or III penny. Certainly there are exceptions, but this should help for very rough ID.
16.02.2025 14:37 β π 3 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0This beautiful seal bag, embroidered with the Royal Arms of England, was made in 1280 to protect the wax seal attached to a royal charter from the reign of Edward I. Both the charter and the seal bag survive in the Westminster Abbey archive collection.
16.02.2025 14:35 β π 3 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0A neat example of a Henry II βTealbyβ penny, class C1, minted by Willem in Newcastle between 1161-1165.
What makes this special is the provenance. This penny was part of Dr. John Sharpβs (Archbishop of York) collection put together between 1687-1714.
I nearly fell off my horse when I was able to assemble the trifecta of Alexander III (second coinage), the Scottish penny, half penny and farthing minted between 1280-1286.
17.01.2025 11:44 β π 9 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0A rare Edward III groat, Pre-Treaty series B minted at London in 1351.
This series of groats is the first reappearance of a 4p coin in England after the very brief, but failed attempt by Edward I to introduce this denomination into circulation in 1279.
A rare David II penny, class B4 with the younger bust and minted in Edinburgh between 1329-1372.
Note the small βDβ in 1/4 of the reverse.

Merry Christmas and happy holidays to all of my wonderful followers! Thanks for all the support this year!
My gift is to show you this pristine example of an Edward I penny minted in London during the summer months of 1279.
Best wishes!

Fantastic! π. What type of coin is it?
24.12.2024 20:28 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0An exceedingly rare Alexander III penny displaying a βbrockageβ mint error.
This error occurs when the coin, once struck, gets stuck to one of the dies and is re-struck against another blank generating a mirror image of the obverse in relief.
Struck by Michel at the Roxburgh mint between 1250-1280
A bit knackered but a very cool Henry VII half penny minted in York. Withers 3Bb
What makes this one stand out is the key located below the bust that was only done in York and only during Henry VII reign.

Edward I penny from the rare class 6 (specifically 6b) minted in London btwn 1292-1296.
The very large crown punch and splayed side fleurs identify this class of pennies that were minted during the lull bookended by Edwardβs massive recoinage in 1279 and his second in 1299-1301

15.12.2024 17:20 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Yup! The βmoneyersβ as a very important job and were held responsible for the oversight and quality of the coins produced. The dies used to actually strike the coins during this period all came from London and were carefully accounted for at all times
15.12.2024 17:01 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Isnβt that remarkable! I really love the whole fractional coins of the time for the craftsmanship needed to produce such amazing coins. And think each of these farthings were struck by hand. A massive amount of work
15.12.2024 16:52 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Wishing everyone a weekend as bright and complete as this Alexander III penny minted in Berwick between 1280-1286
Class: Mb2
An Edward III farthing, Treaty Period, minted in London between 1361-1369.
Very rare to begin with, this example is from a previously unknown obverse die. The crown is of Withers class 8, but the legend has the pellet before βREXβ as in class 9.
A neat contemporary forgery of a Henry III class 3 penny. One can even still see the remnants of the silver plating on the reverse covering the bronze like alloy used to make the coin so as to look authentic.
