A little exclusive this morning: after standardizing reading curricula, the city will also move to standardize the interventions used when children are struggling to learn to read:

I asked former Mayor Bill de Blasio for his thoughts on former Governor Andrew Cuomo running for mayor.
βI donβt think he should be mayor. There you go.β
Important to remember: NYC Public Schools policy has NOT changed. ICE and other non-local law enforcement are NOT allowed to enter school buildings in NYC, unless they have a judicial warrant. Full policy:
05.02.2025 15:25 β π 13 π 4 π¬ 2 π 0Advocates and school communities say rhetoric from President Trump and fear of increased ICE enforcement are already having a chilling effect on school attendance for recently arrived students in NYC public schools.

Today in good Mets omensβ¦ at the Thanksgiving Day Parade: the Temptations performing βMy Girl,β immediately followed by a float featuring Grimace. Just keep the parade going down to the Canyon of Heroes, I got a good feeling about this. #LFGM

18.11.2024 19:57 β π 4 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Actually, re-reading this, I don't see a time limit on how long the family can stay in the shelter AFTER their *second* 60-day notice. So could potentially be staying longer than the 120 days I mentioned. (After presumably having moved once following the first 60-day notice.)
18.11.2024 19:56 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Of course, the city is legally required to bus homeless children to their original school, so it's not like that should have been a surprise to anyone. They have struggled to do so effectively for years, long before the migrant crisis. ny1.com/nyc/all-boro...
18.11.2024 17:54 β π 6 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0We asked these questions over and over when the policy was announced - wouldn't this disrupt students education? And were told no, they can stay in their school. But here, the city acknowledges the policy DID make it hard (and expensive) for them to stay in the same school.
18.11.2024 17:54 β π 6 π 4 π¬ 2 π 0City Hall is changing its policy of moving migrant families every 60 days, to allow those with kids in K-6grades to stay 120 days. Says it will save "hundreds of thousands" of $ spent busing kids to their schools - which MANY people warned would happen as a result of this policy
18.11.2024 17:54 β π 19 π 6 π¬ 1 π 1More than 146,000 New York City students were homeless at some point during the last school year β an increase of 23% from the year before. Thatβs one in eight students.

Took a few months but the birds have finally, suddenly, found the window feeder we put up this summer. Mostly house sparrows and house finches, but hereβs a black-capped chickadee coming in for a quick bite.
17.11.2024 19:05 β π 4 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0The lamest thing about Twitter leadership is how entitled they feel -- to the content users provide them, to advertising dollars -- all while talking about free speech. Choosing where to speak and where to spend your money is part of free speech!
That said, who knows if I'll ever really leave LOL
Twitter isn't some kind of civic duty anybody needs to practice. It's a fringe part of my job and a place I like to make jokes and read Mets takes. The only people I owe my content to are my employers. People move on from social media networks all the time - ask MySpace, or Tumblr, or Xanga.
15.11.2024 18:56 β π 8 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0The audience for my reporting and silly jokes has dwindled, gotten spammy, even hostile, all while Twitter has throttled content for people who won't pay to post and made it clear it doesn't value the work of reporters. So I'm trying something that might better work for me. That's capitalism, baby!
15.11.2024 18:56 β π 4 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0I am somewhat skeptical anyone will overtake Twitter, but the reason I opened this account is that the user experience there has gotten worse. So many bots, much of them pushing adult content. An algorithm that, despite years of heavy use, seems not to know me. Etc.

Also: hello! Iβm here now mostly because I am collecting potential Twitter alternatives like old phone chargers and camera wires shoved in a drawer. You just never know when youβll need them!
13.11.2024 16:48 β π 7 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Thousands of students who speak little or no English have arrived in city schools over the last few years. Many learn in classes where their native language, often Spanish, is rarely or never spoken.
One Lower East Side middle school wants to change that:
