I remember going into City Hall, autumn of '86, seeing the "No Nuclear Weapons" sign on the wall. It was really beautiful, one of the many wonderful things about having Harold Washington as Mayor. Glad this law is still in effect.

I just learned a new #psychology term that perfectly explains why #maga #republicans are still so #angry, and it has shaken my #leftist brain to its foundation. #extinctionburst #politics TikTok video by Ohh that's RICH

Learned a new phrase today that helped me understand both why #MAGA weirdos are so #angry and why it seems like there are more ring-wing zealots than ever (even though there aren't), while also giving me more conviction in the progressive direction.

Voting for the Mayor Who Promised to Blow Up the City Doesn’t Mean I Approve of the Mayor Blowing Up the City It’s so easy to label people these days. From the way folks have been talking, you’d think everyone falls into two buckets: those who voted against...

I wrote this bit that is entirely unrelated to current things

No votes for their nominees. Play hardball. Last chance to make the Senate a meaningful place to serve.

I’m a Therapist. Trump and Musk Are Prompting People to Act in a Very Specific Way Right Now. In times of anxiety, many of us tend to get bossy.

our EIC read this to us today and it's really helped: "We may not have caused our distress, but we decide what to do with it. Will you pass it on to the next person, or will you manage it by being a little more responsible for yourself, and a little more responsible to your neighbors?"

I've read that Haussmann's redesign of Paris with broad boulevards aimed to stop people from blocking the streets in a rebellion. After rebellions of 1960s, US college campuses were designed with exterior halls, so students can't occupy a floor/building (no toilets or water). Long history here.

Thanks for this beautiful article on the real human cost of making "immigration" a political talking point. This great local reporting is why I subscribe to the Chicago Sun-Times though I've lived on the W coast 40 years.

for example, Jack Kerouac was called "Ti-Jean" growing up. I think he referred to himself that way in something or other; long time since I read it.

"Having one king, one god, one belief, they can act single-mindedly. They're strong. Yet the single can be divided. Our strength embraces multitude. This is our sacred earth. We live here with its gods and spirits... Only if they destroy our knowledge are we destroyed."

The biggest problem for the military now is the difficulty of getting capable & qualified people to enlist. Belittling or harassing service members who are gay (or women, people of color, Muslim, etc) can only make it way harder to retain & enlist qualified people.

out of the incandescence of flesh we still call living,
