It depends on the volume you're trying to achieve - small scale is much cheaper, and that's originally what they were going for, but preorders scaled and so have their ambitions.

Would have been better to deliver sooner then grow organically in my view.

It's been "next year" for years. I had a preorder but got a refund after I got fed up with the lack of transparency and honesty.

And there are other companies that have actually rolled this out now.
I think it's arrogance. Around 2016 they ditched MobilEye and tried to develop an in house solution. Result was no self driving at all for new Tesla cars for over a year as it was harder than they thought.

We live in interesting times.
