I know it's easy for me to say cuz that's basically my job! but make that push to seek out what they're into, if their work really struck that much of a chord with you then it'll always be worth it for that deeper connection with their work and them as a artist

If you're really really really really *really* into a director, animator, art director, idk man anyone. You gotta be willing to make that extra push to try and find something from them whether interviews or their twitter.

Naoko Yamada... Well she's an easy one. most people know her as an arthouse nerd anyways. Same for Megumi Ishitani too. And this is just scratching the surface! Not say they're immune from critique but chances are you don't pick up on what they're refencing cuz you haven't seen or experienced it

Keiichiro Saito is a doll otaku, not just in the sense of like figurines but the craft that goes into making/maintaining them, peeps thinking Fuga Yamashiro was the second coming of christ for being such a film nerd, Shingo Natsume talking about math theorems and shit for Sonny Boy

Jack Kirby for Ikarashi but also artists like Sergio Toppi too, Keisuke Mori watching Gobelins shorts and crafting his One Piece MV around them and even inviting one them to work the Fan Letter special, China referencing Fumiko Takano and talking about referencing more illustrators than animators

I think what annoys me about the "more anime creators need to watch stuff that isn't anime!" critique is that peeps aren't willing to do the research to actually find out what their favorite creators are into.
