Deeply reddened by the cosmological redshift, it's member galaxies shine to us with a faint orange glow across the abyss of space and time. All the fuzzy light sources in this image are distant galaxies, and only a modest sprinkling of sharp foreground stars, located in our own Milky Way, reveal our cosmic vantage point. The cluster is so massive that its gravity acts as a lens and distorts the light from galaxies behind it. While several other galaxy clusters contain examples of brighter gravitational arcs than Abell 1689, this cluster features the largest known number of gravitational arcs and is an important target for the study of dark matter. The arcs are very small and faint but a few of the brightest distorted images of distant background galaxies are present in this exposure. Abell 1689 also contains the largest population of globular clusters ever found. A deep high resolution view from the Hubble space Telescope, covering just a tiny part of the cluster, reveals that it is home to an estimated 160,000 such globulars. A staggering number compared to the approximately 150 in our own Milky Way galaxy. 04.08.2025 17:28 โ ๐ 3287 ๐ 1463 ๐ฌ 20 ๐ 3This image covers the central part of the large nebula NGC 6357, also known as the 'Lobster' or 'War and Peace' nebula. The nebula itself appears intensely red, a striking contrast to most emission nebulae which are somewhat more magenta. At the center of the nebula lies a small star cluster Pismis 24 which contain some of the heaviest stars known. The intense ultraviolet radiation from these stars is slowly eroding the surrounding gas and dust away and shaping the delicate structures visible throughout the region. The heaviest of these stars, designated Pismis 24-1, was long thought to weigh some 200 to 300 solar masses, well in excess of the theoretical upper mass limit of about 150 solar masses for an individual star. But in 2006 high-resolution images taken with the Hubble Space Telescope showed that Pismis 24-1 is really two stars orbiting one another. Further to this, ground-based spectroscopic studies have revealed one of the stars to be a tight binary. Still, these three stars are among the heaviest known. The cluster and nebula lies 8000 light years away in the constellation Scorpius. Click here to see a high-resolution comparison of Pismis 24 with images from La Silla and the Hubble Space Telescope. It has a bright yellow-white center, surrounded by a slightly bluish ring, and then a series of concentric shells, which appear as arc-like glowing features with sharp outer edges. Swooping vertically across the galaxy is a stream of faint, translucent white material, which also forms a horizontal line above the galaxy. On the left is a smaller spiral galaxy. It has a yellow-white center that transitions into poorly-defined spiral arms that are dotted with blue star clusters. The outer parts of the spiral arms are a translucent, hazy white, similar to its lenticular companion. The black background of space is dotted with stars and small background galaxies.
