An entirely new type of biomineralization. Could be quite an important discovery. I was involved in some earlier work on this topic, and it seems that silicon is involved in detoxification of REEs in some fern species.

Text "Of the more than 50,000 Ice Age fossils dug up in Project 23, the smallest by far are pollen grains! One gram of sediment can contain hundreds to thousands of these tiny particles, identifiable beneath microscopic lenses." on top of an image of cells on the surface of a fossil leaf from Project 23, Box 1 as seen on an fluorescent microscope.

๐ช๐ฑ We're digging up the best of Project 23!
Hidden in the tar are fossils too small to see with the naked eye: pollen grains.
These microscopic time capsules preserve clues about Ice Age landscapes, revealing what plants grew in ancient L.A. and how ecosystems shifted over thousands of years.

Europe's electricity system is changing rapidly and often in places that don't make the headlines.
Look at Estonia - not that long ago and fossil fuels dominated around 90% of electricity generation.
Today solar and wind eat more and more into the share of fossil fuel-generated electricity.

Sheer cruelty on display in the Home Secretary's proposed new asylum laws, which could see refugee families with children suddenly uprooted and deported after spending years rebuilding their lives in Britain. Shameful capitulation to Reform's agenda at the expense of the most vulnerable.

Bar chart showing estimates of remaining carbon dioxide budgets that give a 50% likelihood of staying below each temperature level, relative to pre-industrial levels.
A baseline label shows global emissions in 2025 at 42 gigatonnes (Gt) per year. Three vertical bars show remaining CO2 budgets: stay below 1.5ยฐC โ 170 Gt, labeled as 4 years of current emissions, with a note that if emissions stay at 2025 levels the 1.5ยฐC budget will be exhausted within 4 years; stay below 1.7ยฐC โ 525 Gt, labeled as 12.5 years of current emissions; stay below 2ยฐC โ 1055 Gt, labeled as 25 years of current emissions, with an annotation saying that by 2050 we will have exhausted the 2ยฐC budget unless emissions are reduced now. Footer note states these estimates have uncertainty and depend on changes in non-CO2 greenhouse gases such as methane and nitrous oxide. Data sources listed as IPCC, Forster et al. (2025) and Global Carbon Project (2025). License CC BY.

Global EV sales remain up YTD at 23% following 1.9 million EVs sold in October
The number of electric vehicles sold globally in October 1.9 million, according the data revealed by leading EV supply chain research and insights company Benchmark Mineral Intelligence.
Global EV sales are up 23% YTD, with 1.9M sold in October โ and historically, the record month every year is December as quotas, fleets, and subsidies all pile in (especially in China). 2025 is the first time Septemberโs 2.1M might actually beat Decemberโฆ but history says December loves to surprise.
