I grew up alongside Mexican-American and union families, where every dollar mattered and everybody looked out for each other. That’s where I learned to serve, to live my Catholic faith, and to honor family by showing up for others.

My name is Gary Schlack.

I’m a proud Democrat, born and raised in Southwest Detroit’s Mexicantown, the son of a Vietnam-era veteran father and a hardworking mother.

This Thanksgiving is a chance to appreciate all we have. Many will come together with family and friends to share a big meal and, of course, we all hope that our Detroit Lions come through this year. Happy Thanksgiving from our family to yours!

This Thanksgiving, Bridget and I are most thankful for these two turkeys.

Our boys are the reason I am running for State Representative — so they and every child in Michigan has a better future.

President John F. Kennedy’s inaugural address inspired children and adults to see the importance of civic action and public service.

We sang carols and relished Christmas cookies with Lincoln Park Mayor Maureen Tobin and met up with Mr. Thomas Karnes inside the Lincoln Park Historical Museum. Then, we traveled to Melvindale to meet with Santa and Mayor Nicole Shkira! Very special day for the Schlack Family!

Family and I continued our joyful Christmas journey last night in Lincoln Park and Melvindale!!

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas!

Being in the Allen Park Lighted Christmas Parade is something I look forward to every year, and last night was no different. Thank you to everyone who has a role in making this tradition happen for our community.

I’m grateful to everyone who has reached out, asked questions, and raised concerns. Please continue to stay engaged.

As a City Councilmember, and as someone running to represent Michigan's 2nd State House District, I believe we deserve development that strengthens Downriver and improves our quality of life.

Data centers consume huge amounts of energy and water while creating relatively few long-term jobs. Meanwhile, residents would face higher utility costs, more noise, and environmental impacts we cannot ignore.

I’ve heard from many neighbors about the proposed data center expected to come before the Allen Park City Council in the coming months and I share their concern.

To every veteran across Downriver and beyond: thank you.

In the years since, I became a Councilmember in Allen Park to give back to my community. I still see that same spirit of service all around me as I serve my second term and run to become your next State Rep in Michigan’s 2nd State House District—Allen Park, Lincoln Park, Melvindale, and Southgate.

But for many of us, the two days will always be connected. You can’t celebrate service without remembering sacrifice. Pride and pain walk together. It’s a pride for those who came home and built new lives, and a quiet ache for those whose stories ended too soon.

Veterans Day is different from Memorial Day. Memorial Day honors the fallen, those who never made it home. Veterans Day honors all who served, those who still carry the memories, and those who continue to serve in their own ways every day.

The memories of my time spent in the service never left me. They taught me what it truly means to serve with honor and integrity.

In 2006, I completed Basic Combat Training (what most people call boot camp) at Fort Benning, Georgia. There, I earned the blue Infantryman Shoulder Cord and became an Infantryman.

What the Army taught me was how to live it—through loyalty to the mission, courage when it counted, and standing your ground for the person next to you when things got tough.

When I joined the U.S. Army National Guard, I already understood what respect meant. My parents and my community taught me that long before I put on the uniform.

Veterans Day isn’t just another date on the calendar. It’s a day that stays with everyone who’s ever worn the uniform.

As a Dearborn City Council Member and State Representative, Erin has proven herself to be a principled leader who always shows up. I can’t wait to call her Allen Park’s next State Senator!

I stopped by the opening of the new @michigandems.bsky.social Detroit Headquarters on Woodward last night.

It is exciting to finally have a home for the MDP in Southeast Michigan. Thank you to Chair Hertel for helping make this a reality!

I'm glad to see the Court of Appeals upheld the Constitution and ordered these 9 bipartisan bills be sent to Governor Whitmer.

Speaker Matt Hall and House Republicans must’ve skipped civics class. The Legislature passes bills, the Governor signs or vetoes them—not the Speaker.
