06.08.2025 22:16 β π 5 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Finished "Hated By All the Right People," Jason Zengerle's book about Tucker Carlson. It's a sad comment on American political journalism going back to the 1990s, when Carlson wrote for The Weekly Standard. Since then, we've been living by one simple adage: It's good dog food if the dog will eat it.
06.08.2025 19:22 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0The Jim Marshall/Grateful Dead book got a little love on the CBS Evening News.
03.08.2025 14:40 β π 3 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Dennis McNally, Nicholas Meriwether, and I are talking about the Grateful Dead tonight at Manny's. Hosted by Adam Hirschfelder. No one has done more than Dennis and Nick to help us understand the Dead and their achievement. 6 pm, see you there.
29.07.2025 13:43 β π 3 π 2 π¬ 0 π 0Nice little university/law firm/television network you have here. Be a shame if anything happened to it.
19.07.2025 02:00 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Losing $535 million for public media is an absurd defeat. Perhaps a good time to start the campaign for ten times that amount.
17.07.2025 18:21 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Sol Stern was an important figure at Ramparts magazine during its heyday. Later he landed at a conservative think tank and reviewed my book about Ramparts. That led to a spirited exchange, but I always appreciated his perspective, not to mention his achievements as a journalist. RIP Sol Stern.
15.07.2025 18:42 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Extra points for the High Thompson Drag.
08.07.2025 22:56 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Delighted that Rolling Stone magazine is featuring the work of Jim Marshall. Thanks again to Amelia Davis and David Gans for the chance to contribute an essay to the collection. H/T Dan Sullivan and Rosie McGee.
06.07.2025 14:57 β π 7 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Josh Wood quoted Bill McKeen and me in this article about Hunter Thompson and his hometown. Thompson didn't write much about Louisville, but his Kentucky Derby piece for Scanlan's changed the arc of his career.
02.07.2025 04:36 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Just heard a story about Trump's "chaos tax" in higher education. One Heritage Foundation jackass wondered why U.S. colleges admit so many foreign students. That's like asking U.S. firms why they sell to foreign customers. It's called an export, man. Look it up.
27.06.2025 21:31 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0The Dodger organization said it refused to allow ICE agents to enter its stadium's parking lot. That reminded me of Dodger Stadium's complex history. We all know the story of Chavez Ravine, but when Proposition B tried to thwart the stadium's construction, Latino voters helped defeat the measure.
20.06.2025 14:34 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0So far as I can determine, the No Kings demonstrations were the second-largest single-day mass mobilization, measured by the number of participants and the number and extent of places, in American history. 1/4
16.06.2025 16:05 β π 5 π 1 π¬ 3 π 0Mark Paul says it's the second largest after Earth Day. Third largest was the Vietnam Moratorium. The New York Times devoted much more space to those two events.
16.06.2025 17:08 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Hit the Sonoma demonstration downtown and buzzed the ones at Maxwell Park and Boyes Hot Springs. No kings, just aces back to back. #nokings
15.06.2025 03:25 β π 33 π 3 π¬ 0 π 0Majority Whip John Barrasso (Wyoming) on Senator Alex Padilla: βWhy isnβt he here in Washington voting?β If DHS's goal is to "liberate" Los Angeles from its leadership, Senator Padilla was in exactly the right place.
13.06.2025 15:20 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0"We are not going away," Noem said. "We are staying here to liberate this city from the socialist and the burdensome leadership that this governor and that this mayor have placed on this country." WE DON'T WANT YOUR LIBERATION.
13.06.2025 04:18 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Bedwetters? Rolling Stones? Pontificate their feelings? Stay classy, White House.
12.06.2025 16:15 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Rolling Stone quoted Trump advisers concerned about Elon Musk. A White House statement denounced them as "bedwetters who would rather use the failing Rolling Stones [sic] as a therapy session to anonymously pontificate their feelings to the press." About what I expect from this White House.
12.06.2025 16:09 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0In English it has a precise meaning. "Shall" in the second and third person has the force of a guarantee or commandment. In the first person, it's a prediction. "Will" is the opposite. Promise in the first person, prediction in the second and third. Fun with modal auxiliaries.
29.05.2025 13:43 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Sorry I missed you. Was there for five weeks.
24.05.2025 18:34 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Where you at?
23.05.2025 13:14 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0My month in NOLA was fabulous. Family and friends (old and new). Geeking out over the Dead and Hunter Thompson. Music and poetry. Walks through the neighborhoods and along the river. Memorable meals and the occasional beverage. But mostly the conversations, which were good for my soul.
20.05.2025 02:45 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Adventures in Micro-Celebrity: One of the GonzoFest panelists wrote about my book in a recent essay but clearly didn't recognize me. After the panel, I said we had a lot to talk about. Thank you for your interest in my work, she replied. I could have said the same thing.
19.05.2025 11:58 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0GonzoFest is under way in New Orleans. I'm already having a blast. I will say a few words tonight about the origins of Gonzo at the Garden District Book Shop. The program starts at 5 pm, details for the whole weekend at gonzofest.net.
16.05.2025 11:12 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Maybe she includes this quote from 2023: "We pledge to you that we will root out the communists, Marxists, fascists, and the radical left thugs that live like vermin within the confines of our country."
02.05.2025 20:46 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0David Horowitz died. He was an important part of Ramparts magazine before he (and Peter Collier) made the long march to the right wing. Cal professor Fred Crews said they were very talented, but I can't celebrate the post-Ramparts impact they had on American politics and culture.
30.04.2025 22:22 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Same. Even after I retired. At least twice. Verbatim.
