Finished "Hated By All the Right People," Jason Zengerle's book about Tucker Carlson. It's a sad comment on American political journalism going back to the 1990s, when Carlson wrote for The Weekly Standard. Since then, we've been living by one simple adage: It's good dog food if the dog will eat it.

Sol Stern was an important figure at Ramparts magazine during its heyday. Later he landed at a conservative think tank and reviewed my book about Ramparts. That led to a spirited exchange, but I always appreciated his perspective, not to mention his achievements as a journalist. RIP Sol Stern.

Ravine Politics: How Dodger Stadium Defined Los Angeles | Los Angeles Review of Books Peter Richardson tours the “City of Dreams: Dodger Stadium and the Birth of Modern Los Angeles” by Jerald Podair.

The Dodger organization said it refused to allow ICE agents to enter its stadium's parking lot. That reminded me of Dodger Stadium's complex history. We all know the story of Chavez Ravine, but when Proposition B tried to thwart the stadium's construction, Latino voters helped defeat the measure.

So far as I can determine, the No Kings demonstrations were the second-largest single-day mass mobilization, measured by the number of participants and the number and extent of places, in American history. 1/4

Mark Paul says it's the second largest after Earth Day. Third largest was the Vietnam Moratorium. The New York Times devoted much more space to those two events.

Sen. Alex Padilla is forcibly removed from DHS Secretary Kristi Noem's news conference in Los Angeles Noem was in L.A. to address the ongoing protests against President Donald Trump's immigration policies. Federal agents handcuffed Padilla after his removal.

"We are not going away," Noem said. "We are staying here to liberate this city from the socialist and the burdensome leadership that this governor and that this mayor have placed on this country." WE DON'T WANT YOUR LIBERATION.

Bedwetters? Rolling Stones? Pontificate their feelings? Stay classy, White House.

Rolling Stone quoted Trump advisers concerned about Elon Musk. A White House statement denounced them as "bedwetters who would rather use the failing Rolling Stones [sic] as a therapy session to anonymously pontificate their feelings to the press." About what I expect from this White House.

In English it has a precise meaning. "Shall" in the second and third person has the force of a guarantee or commandment. In the first person, it's a prediction. "Will" is the opposite. Promise in the first person, prediction in the second and third. Fun with modal auxiliaries.

My month in NOLA was fabulous. Family and friends (old and new). Geeking out over the Dead and Hunter Thompson. Music and poetry. Walks through the neighborhoods and along the river. Memorable meals and the occasional beverage. But mostly the conversations, which were good for my soul.

David Horowitz died. He was an important part of Ramparts magazine before he (and Peter Collier) made the long march to the right wing. Cal professor Fred Crews said they were very talented, but I can't celebrate the post-Ramparts impact they had on American politics and culture.
