I reviewed this forthcoming book about Tucker Carlson. In addition to tracking his career, it offers a disturbing portrait of what now passes for political commentary.

Books about Hunter Thompson, the Grateful Dead, Ramparts magazine, and Carey McWilliams. Next: Rolling Stone magazine (April 2026)
I reviewed this forthcoming book about Tucker Carlson. In addition to tracking his career, it offers a disturbing portrait of what now passes for political commentary.
09.11.2025 16:27 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Why return to make budget deals when the president refuses to honor the ones they've already made?
08.11.2025 16:18 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Horrible. And should be "lie there," but whatever.
08.11.2025 01:30 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0I taught a lot of courses in my day, but I don't think I ever offered a Feckless Workshop for Leftist Political Orthodoxy. h/t New York Times.
29.10.2025 13:54 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Draymond Green: It's ridiculous to think that the NBA isn't concerned about gambling. Yes, the league has official partnerships with FanDuel, DraftKings, BetMGM, Fanatics Sportsbook, ESPN Bet, and Caesars Sportsbook. But it also makes the players watch a video about gambling every year.
29.10.2025 13:37 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0One more chance to untangle the films, books, politics, and mob activity during Los Angeles's most incandescent year. We finish with a strong dose of graft, extortion, and labor racketeering--plus the reforms that led to the rise of Las Vegas. Grateful to Cal's OLLI program for offering this class.
29.10.2025 01:40 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0We're here to serve the economy, apparently. Not the other way around.
24.10.2025 14:00 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Was thinking of him recently. He spoke at a panel I organized at the Bay Area Book Festival.
22.10.2025 22:39 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0The venue opened that year. (My high school class graduated there two years later.)
17.10.2025 23:02 β π 4 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0First OLLI session at Cal: "City on Fire: Los Angeles in 1939." We'll look at that year under four aspects: film, literature, politics, and organized crime. Today was an overview of the city's early history and the extraordinary films that came out that year.
13.10.2025 23:22 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0I reviewed Cameron Crowe's memoir, The Uncool, for Kirkus. Highly recommended, especially if you liked Almost Famous.
28.09.2025 13:15 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0I was thinking of that too.
08.09.2025 14:01 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Thanks, Jon. I reviewed this book (positively) for Kirkus Reviews.
05.09.2025 02:23 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Also the Gleason book.
05.09.2025 02:18 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Congrats for scoring a copy of "Going Down with Janice." Those aren't easy to come by.
05.09.2025 02:17 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0In his DC outburst, why would Stephen Miller disparage old, white, dumb people? That's Trump's base. Which makes Miller's fourth descriptor, hippies, the insult's active ingredient. The base can rightly say, "Well, I may be old, white, and dumb, but at least I'm not a hippie."
04.09.2025 14:23 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0The most important piece about Salazar's death and its aftermath was Hunter S. Thompson's "Strange Rumblings in Aztlan." It was commissioned by Warren Hinckle at Scanlan's but ran in Rolling Stone. Oscar Acosta, who drew Thompson to LA, later accompanied him to Las Vegas. (That's another story.)
30.08.2025 12:16 β π 4 π 2 π¬ 1 π 0MY LATEST @latimes.com β¬β© COLUMNA: Slain L.A. Times columnist Ruben Salazar matters more than ever. Share, porfas!
29.08.2025 14:17 β π 10 π 10 π¬ 2 π 4A good example: A week after the NFL took a 10% stake in ESPN, ESPN canceled the Spike Lee documentary about Colin Kaepernick. "Creative differences," NDAs, etc. A few years ago, ESPN broke the story on brain trauma in pro football. As you say, sports is a microcosm.
21.08.2025 21:37 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Sounds like Rosie McGee missed the performance but caught some of the aftermath.
21.08.2025 21:16 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Stephen Miller thinks hippies are easy targets. It certainly worked for Reagan in 1966, and now hippie-punching extends to senior citizens. Feels desperate, yes, but it's also time to retire the cartoon version of the counterculture.
21.08.2025 17:26 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Amen. In other news, Newsmax just agreed to pay $67 million to settle its defamation case against Dominion Voting Systems.
18.08.2025 19:38 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0If anyone ever asks, I invented the term "nepo-hubris"β’οΈ last week.
12.08.2025 23:03 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0My thoughts on Jim Newton's "Here Beside the Rising Tide: Jerry Garcia, the Grateful Dead, and an America Awakening." www.kirkusreviews.com/book-reviews...
06.08.2025 22:16 β π 4 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Finished "Hated By All the Right People," Jason Zengerle's book about Tucker Carlson. It's a sad comment on American political journalism going back to the 1990s, when Carlson wrote for The Weekly Standard. Since then, we've been living by one simple adage: It's good dog food if the dog will eat it.
06.08.2025 19:22 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0The Jim Marshall/Grateful Dead book got a little love on the CBS Evening News.
03.08.2025 14:40 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Dennis McNally, Nicholas Meriwether, and I are talking about the Grateful Dead tonight at Manny's. Hosted by Adam Hirschfelder. No one has done more than Dennis and Nick to help us understand the Dead and their achievement. 6 pm, see you there.
29.07.2025 13:43 β π 3 π 2 π¬ 0 π 0Nice little university/law firm/television network you have here. Be a shame if anything happened to it.
19.07.2025 02:00 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Losing $535 million for public media is an absurd defeat. Perhaps a good time to start the campaign for ten times that amount.
17.07.2025 18:21 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Sol Stern was an important figure at Ramparts magazine during its heyday. Later he landed at a conservative think tank and reviewed my book about Ramparts. That led to a spirited exchange, but I always appreciated his perspective, not to mention his achievements as a journalist. RIP Sol Stern.
