The Declaration’s Journey
Special Exhibition
October 18, 2025-January 3, 2027
“This contemporary painting by Haitian artist Madsen Mompremier shares the story of Jean-Jacques Dessalines tearing away the white portion of the French flag to create the red and blue flag of Haiti. On the right side of the painting, Catherine Flon, Dessalines's god-daughter, is shown sewing the two parts of the flag together. This moment is celebrated each year on May 18 as Haitian Flag Day.”
Clockmaker George Miller of Germantown, Pennsylvania, produced this tall case clock.
It commemorates General James Wolfe, a popular British hero of the French and Indian War (1754-1763), with an engraved portrait of him above the clock face. Wolfe died leading the expedition that captured Quebec City from the French in 1759. British and American artisans decorated many kinds of objects with his portrait.
Lafayette presented a declaration of rights to the French National Assembly on July 11, 1789. His draft was influenced by both the United States Declaration of Independence and its principal author, Thomas Jefferson. The initial articles shown here refer to inalienable rights, including the pursuit of happiness. The final version of the text, approved in August 1789, reflected revisions from Abbé Emmanuel Joseph Sieyès and Honoré Mirabeau.
Great visit yesterday to the @amrevmuseum.bsky.social yesterday! We saw George Washington’s tent, which really is an extraordinary artifact, and so much more.
