Putting radio tags in those suckers was my entry into freshwater science! (Almost exactly 25 yrs ago.) We caught them by swimming over them and scooping them with a salmon dip net. Some migrated as far as from Troy, OR to Lewiston, ID

COMPASS Pathfinders: Conservation Leaders | COMPASS

Why am I so excited about COMPASS Pathfinders Program?

It's based on Wilburforce Fellowship in Conservation Science. I was in 2015 cohort. It was extraordinary -- I still benefit from the targeted training, generous network, & powerful collaboration.

Apply!

For reasons that don’t need elaboration, things have been unusually busy so if you’ve followed me recently and you’re a fisheries/climate impacts/aquatic biodiversity/etc acct and I haven’t followed back yet, thanks for your patience!

It is, thanks, those are good examples. And so many other things too, programs, safety networks, whole frigging systems that were not 100% efficient (nothing is) but worked more or less to provide for folks in so many ways

Abundant Rivers What role can hatcheries play in recovering harvestable salmon abundance while protecting wild populations?

I'm forever a fan of getting a nature fix, but I reject for the sole purpose of being more productive

Thanks, but I'll keep that 30 min for myself

Watershed-scale dispersal patterns of juvenile Chinook Salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha) revealed through genetic parentage analysis - Movement Ecology Background For many aquatic taxa, juvenile dispersal from spawning locations to rearing habitats is a critical process influencing individual fitness and population dynamics. However, our understandin...

When baby salmon emerge from the gravel, how far do they disperse to summer rearing grounds? We haven't known until now (at least at the population scale), because they're too small to tag. In a paper just out, we answered this question using parentage-based (genetic) tagging! tinyurl.com/39b2sfjd
