The pace of scientific publishing is absurdly slow. But sometimes that means you wake up on Monday morning to the acceptance of a paper that was submitted a year and a half ago that you mostly forgot about. So, silver lining and I'll be taking the rest of the day off.

two pictures of a house, taken from opposite sides. The first, with a label from realtor.com, shows a large blue house from the direction of the garage. The second, from the other side, shows that the ground beneath the main part of the house has collapsed and the structure is in shambles.

I've been competing in endurance races for 20 years. Some folks are there for podium places. Some folks are just there to get to the end. For 99% of the race, if someone passes you, you encourage them. And if they beat you in the last 1%, you congratulate them after.

We need more of this in life.

Three people in my lab applied for visas for a meeting in India. All with identical itineraries an&d identical letters of invitation. The only difference was citizenship: UK, Canada, US

Only the US was denied. We might have lost our privileged perch.

(or it was totally random, which is possible)

This is horrible on so many levels. But as a matter of historical fact, in the case of Tokyo and Berlin, we were actually at war with those countries. Congressionally approved war. IF "we" are going to do this (we shouldn't), then this must be at the discretion of the people via our representatives.

I had to edit a manuscript with AI generated text and citations. The latter were often hallucinated, had broken links, or were citations of citations that required levels of trace back to find the original source.

So, the coming semester should be fun.
