The most important aspect that trumps everything is writing something that brings about excitement and joy. Especially if its subject matter that is grounded in reality and firsthand experience. You do not want to write something that you're kinda wishy-washy about. You will hit a brickwall.

The Black List is a fantastic place where you'll be able to submit scripts for TV shows, films, etc. It does cost $30 a month to host writing material, though.
But they are programs where you can apply to hone your skills.
