TriMet Board Member Goes to BAT for Better Buses
"Let's play to win, rather than playing not to lose"
The youngest member of the TriMet Board of Directors, 30-year old JT Flowers, just might be the best hope for transit advocacy we've ever had in one of those positions.

Up early protecting this beautiful diverter from being needlessly removed by City of Portland. @bikeloudpdx.bsky.social @familiesforsafestreets.org @strongtownspdx.bsky.social

Excellent investigative reporting @bikeportland.org on City plans to remove diverters.
Big diverters slow car traffic & reclaim street space for people.
BikeLoud @strongtownspdx.bsky.social Bike Advisory Committee question City motives.
@councilorgreen.bsky.social supports diverters.
Stay tuned..

If you work inside city government, citizen-led initiatives like unsanctioned crosswalks, handmade benches, and painted curb extensions can feel like a challenge. But your reaction says everything to the people who live and work outside of city hall.

“This crosswalk in Hollywood is near an apartment where seniors and low income residents live and walk to grocery stores, the farmers market, and bus or MAX stops nearby. Traffic coming from I-84, Sandy, and Halsey speed at this intersection, making it dangerous for pedestrians crossing.”

A simpler zoning code would help more of our neighbors build the housing, retail, etc. that we need, rather than relying on large out-of-state developers.

As painful as this year’s budget cycle has been, we are not done yet. We will be going through another round of deep cuts next year as Downtown property values continue to fall. We urge PBOT to embrace its role in economic development and help Portlanders build a prosperous city.

The city needs to orient itself towards street treatments which improve local economic conditions and away from low-productivity roads.

One of the core insights of Strong Towns is that streets are a platform for building community wealth. Real, measurable, financial wealth. This plaza treatment, while not perfect, was a potent source of economic development for the city with very little investment required
