But the upfront costs of nuclearization of a merchant vessel - technology, training, general maintenance - are currently unknown. So it's really hard to do a meaningful cost analysis.

But consider that refueling and overhaul of naval vessels requires full dry dock for usually two years. How much would that cost the industry? Even if you skip out on overhaul, it's significant downtime. You'd also need to consider how many ports are nuclear free, and thus no longer accessible.

I can't believe there's a fleet in the world willing to spend a single dime on private security when the entire focus of the industry has been on paring back crews to the absolute bare minimum.

Utilities didn't want that type of nuclear tech, and the US has been paying for it ever since in the form of inefficient plants, poor designs, and massive cost overruns.

This was a big problem when Rickover tried to give utilities naval nuke tech for free (as the USG desperately tried to find a peaceful use for their designs). A utility can't afford to take a power plant offline for extensive service. The tech was essentially forced on them by the USG.

The naval reactor model is not a good one for commerical application, because it requires vessels be removed from active duty for servicing. A vessel that sits in port is a hole in the water you pour money into for freight. The vessel needs to be constantly working.
