Duke Energy seeks higher rates, profits in NC despite soaring disconnections Duke Energy wants permission to raise bills and profits in North Carolina, even as growing disconnection rates put people’s lives at risk.

Duke Energy is asking for a massive rate hike at the same exact time utility shutoffs have skyrocketed. Thanks to @suesturgis.bsky.social for her reporting. energyandpolicy.org/duke-energy-...

Charlotte’s data center surge β€” pricey, power-hungry and shrouded in secrecy Big Tech is pouring billions into Carolinas data centers to meet AI demand. But the public remains in the dark on the scope of what’s here and what’s coming.

A little transparency from the data center industry and utilities would go a long way. www.charlotteobserver.com/news/busines...

There are a lot of wasteful uses of energy and fossil fuels, but using a gas powered leaf blower to clear THE STREET in front of your house might be the worst.

I really liked the article. One topic I’d be fascinated to read about that seems up your alley would be languages across the players. Who speaks the most different languages in the locker room? What languages do players use when talking to each other?

somewhere in portland, there's one person, or a small handful of people, who came up with the inflatable costume idea, and I feel like they deserve our immense respect for defining the obvious developing aesthetic of the contemporary battle against fascism

Newest big U.S. coal-plant offline until 2027 The newest major coal-fired power plant in the U.S. is expected to be offline until March 2027 after a major failure in April.

But I was told coal is perfectly reliable and we had to have it or our lights would go out!

While regs did play a role, all the regs do is level the playing field to some degree by accounting for pollution impacts. It’s not fair to blame regs when all people are asking for is β€œhey, don’t poison my air and water. I’d like to live.”

More than one truly awful thing in this bill. In addition to CWIP, the bill also shifts a bunch of costs from industrial customers to residential folks through changing how fuel and purchased power are allocated. Guess who was in the room when this leg was written? (Hint: industrial groups)

The Spanish government is reporting that the cause of the massive blackout wasn't a lack of thermal power plants - rather that they failed to provide power at the time, acting 'inappropriately'.

Funny, after fossil lobbyists were so quick to blame renewables..

How β€œhelpful” the Next Generation Energy Act is is also up in the air. It’s a pretty big handout to new gas plants, preferencing them over all other resources.

I don’t think these wins are so clear cut. Next Generation Energy Act also preferences gas at the expense of renewables, storage and demand side resources. So overall a mixed bag.

Good morning with good news: US fossil fuel generated electricity fell to its record low share in April, down to 49.26%!

FF electricity has been below the 50% milestone in both March & April!

That is historic, as monthly FF electricity had never been below 50% since at least 1940s.

What was HB6? Corrupt bailout for two awful coal plants and a nuke. Why was it corrupt? Glad you asked.

Trump to Bolster Coal with Executive Order Washington, D.C. -Β According toΒ Politico, today Donald Trump will sign executive orders in an attempt to bolster coal production in the United States.

Propping up a dying industry that kills millions. Trump's EOs today to fulfill promises to coal execs will not revive this industry, but they will prolong the harms to public health, communities, and the climate. @sierraclub.org

The settlement requires the PSC to disavow the directive to utilities to run their coal plants no matter the cost. Still work to do to ensure the utilities in WV are operating their coal fleets in a manner that minimizes costs to customers, but this is a big win for the people of the state!

These are some of the most energy burdened people in the country. WV is the 3rd oldest population in the country and has the second lowest median income. The mandate was clearly forcing residents to line the pockets of wealthy coal executives. No surprise as the coal industry wields A LOT of power.

The WVPSC issued a directive a couple of years ago that coal plants had to run at least 69% of time, regardless of whether or not there was cheaper power available on the market. Complying with this order was costing West Virginia customers millions.
