Federica Manca et al's network analyses show that marine macrophyte-animal associations can be highly structured and they are not random assemblages. Additionally, the key species bladderwrack is again showing how important it is!

Despite some differences between the methods, some common trends were detected.

Initial results: sea-air exchange of aerosol precursor gases, VOCs and CO2 at the coast are highly dynamic, influenced by meteorological and biological conditions.

Coastal zones are identified as important natural carbon sinks globally, but in brackish environments like the Baltic Sea, knowledge of coastal carbon sequestration is limited.

This new study shows that shallow and partly enclosed Baltic bays are significant sinks for carbon and nutrients.

New publication! Gammal et al. sampled benthic macrofauna, solute fluxes and environmental variables at 3 shallow habitats throughout one year.
Results show that the strength of biodiversity-function relationships really depends on which species are present in which habitat and during which season.

Our researchers are exploring patterns in greenhouse gas emissions along the NZ coastline! Preliminary results agree with the findings from the Baltic Sea that stressed and degraded coastal ecosystems become net emitters of GHG:s, and highlights the importance of proper management of coastal areas.
