I found this tumblr post about getting blue lines out of your page. It saved my bacon and I turned it into an auto-action. Posting here in case anyone needs to do the same for their originals or blueline work: www.tumblr.com/briskby/1623... #clipstudio #comicsky

18 for me. I feel the FOMO every year, but it was so busy and crowded last time I was there I took the Saturday off to go to the zoo.

With the hotel and badge lottery it just doesnโ€™t seem worth it to try.

My mom was reminiscing about him when I was 14 or 15, and wishing she could hear him again (him being in fashion during her university years) so I managed to find his still in print records and bought three for Christmas that year. I donโ€™t think Iโ€™ve ever seen my mom piss her pants laughing so hard!

Trying to get back into the drawing thing after my injury.

Working on an old unfinished Wahoo Morris short story for fun.

I'm not sure if it's just that it's been awhile, or just my thing, but I really struggle to do "finished" pencils. I always want to dive into the inks before I've finished.

Ooh. I need that. I bought a Japanese book of โ€œorientalism artโ€ awhile back for costume /culture ideas for my s&s comic Sian.

Yeah, thatโ€™s exactly how I felt.

Itโ€™s been 7 years since book 2 came out and I did a read through of the whole thing, so this time, yeah, it was familiar but I actually read it and chuckled at some of the jokes etc. and kept thinking โ€œshit, this is actuallyโ€ฆ good.โ€

I did the same thing with my old comic Wahoo Morris last week.

Needed to check a costume design thing and ended up wasting a few hours clicking through the web comic version, reading the whole thing.

Itโ€™s been long enough since I last did a read through that I actually โ€œreadโ€ it and enjoyed it.

Regular India ink can be watered down for grey washes and the washes are waterproof, so you should be able to thin it out. (I think)

I used to put my ink for the day in a syrup cap. But my giant bottle of Higgins black magic got all goopy anyway.

From The Giant Claw, which I saw on the World's Worst film Festival on CBC when I was in High School.

Thereโ€™s a good chunk of a concert in the movie Born To Boogie.

Depends on if it is short run digital or offset.

Digital printers it is multiples of 4.
Offset is multiples of 8.

That issue , and the marvel comics adaptation, had me waiting and waiting in vain for Rock and Rule to come out.

It was like unto a miracle when the cbc broadcast it one evening in Iโ€™m guessing โ€˜85.

A writer can take on writing Batman on a monthly basis for a year and keep their day job as per the OPs advice.

A regular artist will have to take the leap and quit their day job to do the same.

03.07.2025 15:10 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 0    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

Dude, Iโ€™m not arguing with you or dismissing you.

Iโ€™m a 30 year part time self publisher whoโ€™s done a Handful of WFH inking gigs. Iโ€™ve never โ€œbroken inโ€ as a penciller so I donโ€™t hold myself to some higher standard. Iโ€™m just saying I couldnโ€™t have done those WFH gigs AND kept a day job. Thatโ€™s it.

03.07.2025 15:05 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 1    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 2    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

The original post: โ€œkeep your day jobโ€ was a reaction to a broader discourse going on right now about how few making comics full time are actually making a living.

Iโ€™m self publishing too. only difference is I remain a Gig worker, but I can now choose to take one on or pass and work for me.

03.07.2025 14:59 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 0    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

And that is doable for a writer.

But it isnโ€™t doable for an artist.

Which is why, if you want to work full-time as a freelance comic artist you need to marry well.

03.07.2025 14:15 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 0    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 0    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

Except it doesnโ€™t last. There is no such thing as a regular job as an artist. There are only gigs.

Even the top artists are doing 6-12 month gigs.

Thatโ€™s the point. Keeping the day job to hold you over in between gigs because unless you are an A-lister there are going to be a LOT of breaks.

03.07.2025 13:49 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 0    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

All of my small output for DC has been Sandman Universe. It really sucks to have the โ€œdo I put this on the table?โ€debate at every show.

03.07.2025 13:26 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 4    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 0    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

So holding on to your day job is great advice.

But unfortunately if you want to take that monthly comics gig as an artist you are probably going to have to quit the 9-5 (or take leave) to hit your deadline.

03.07.2025 13:21 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 1    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

I havenโ€™t done WFH in a while, but the point is that it isnโ€™t steady work.

You might land a monthly that lasts for 12 issues, then be unable to find work again for 6 months, a year, two years, then another gig.

Not a lot of people in comics work month in month out for 30 years straight.

03.07.2025 13:13 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 1    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 2    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

Eventually I got tired of it and moved into animation. Still gig work, but I found it easier to find work.

I made comics on the side for 18 years.

To the OPโ€™s second advice for artists: Marry Well!

That can allow you to weather the ups and downs and low points better than if you are on your own.

03.07.2025 13:08 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 2    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 0    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

The deadlines didnโ€™t leave any breathing room for a 9-5.

I made a decent living for 12 months, then I was replaced with no warning or explanation and I was trying to find another job so I could make rent.

6 months later, another comics gig comes along, have to quit the 9-5โ€ฆ rinse and repeat.

03.07.2025 13:03 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 2    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

But I havenโ€™t met an artist that could make the leap to a monthly book without quitting the day job.

Iโ€™m primarily a self publisher on the side, too.

But I worked as an inker in the 90โ€™s while I was working full time at a grocery store and I managed to keep both for two weeks before I had to quit.

03.07.2025 12:55 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 1    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

Maybe I misunderstood the OPโ€™s meaningโ€ฆ to break in to โ€œFull timeโ€ work AND keep a day job.

There are plenty of writers who have written monthlies for MArvel and DC who have kept their day jobs outside comics. And it is smart to do that as comics are gig work and there are no gaurantees.
