A comic strip titled The Amazing World of Tomorrow.
A food delivery robot cooler drives down a sidewalk.
It crashes into a rental scooter.
It backs up.
It crashes into the rental scooter again. The scooter wobbles.
The scooter falls to the ground as the food delivery robot backs up again.
A driverless taxi crashes into both the scooter and the food delivery robot sending them flying.

OK fine there are other absurd baseball games whose broken mechanics make them just as good as Base Wars

We watched One Cut of the Dead tonight (second time for me, first for Meg). Tough movie to introduce to people because the first 30 minutes are not great and you have to be like "this gets really really good and I can't tell you how or why, but sitting through this opening bit is part of it"

Spine 669: Charulata | Lost in Criterion Satyajit Ray's Charulata (1964) is a masterpiece. We haven't seen a film that so exquisitely captures longing since Wong Kar Wai's In the Mood for Love (2000) 500 Spines ago. In ten more years I suspe...

Our second in back to back Satyajit Ray films, Charulata (1964) is among the most visually stunning films we've seen, so viscerally (and visually) capturing longing.

My atheists / agnostic friend who did not grow up in any form of Christianity just said β€œA lot of the bible sure seems to read like an obituary for empire” and I almost just hollered in tongues.

β€œIt is not theft, properly speaking, to take secretly and use another's property in a case of extreme need: because that which he takes for the support of his life becomes his own property by reason of that need." - Thomas Aquinas reminds us that if you see someone stealing food, no you didn't.

So much of "cancel culture" discourse is a re-description of the normal functioning of a democracy and public discourse by people who didn't like the results of one, or both, or how it made them feel.

What many Christians fail to understand about "turn the other check" is that it is not a command to passive acceptance, but active resistance. When the oppressor, Roman or otherwise, demands submission, turning the other cheek is saying "what are you going to do? Shoot me? I'll die for this shit."

Spine 668: The Big City | Lost in Criterion We absolutely fell in love with the films of Satyajit Ray when we first watched The Music Room a few years ago, and we are so happy that Criterion is finally showing us more of his work. The Big City ...

The Criterion Collection is finally showing us two (or three) more Satyajit Ray films! This week we talk about the beautiful The Big City (1963), and as a bonus get to see the more cynical but equally lyrical The Coward (1965).
